Experiences with non-techies

I work retail in a tech store so I have a lot to talk about, but my favorite was the other day.  A family came in wanting an Ethernet cable so I showed them where they were.  They refused to purchase any because they said none of them would work, when I asked why I was told they needed a yellow cable and other colors won't work.  They insisted that they tested other colored cables and that no Ethernet cable would work except their yellow one.  Even after I tried explaining that the color doesn't matter and that it was the same cable on the inside.

Hey LTT forum, i have just come back today from Dubai. Thus i wanted to share a story with your guys to start this thread off

Well a couple of days ago, when me and my dad went to my dad's close friend who he hasnt met in 16 years. Well his son has an Xbox One for gaming. Well i asked him to show me his computer becuase it was running "slow", and so i could upgrade it to Windows 10. TO my shock, it was a very capable AIO (HP's flagship model with Beats) that has a quad core i7. Well i told him it was due to three things: bloatware on his OS,  not being installed in UEFI mode (even though his PC supports it fully)  and not having an SSD (the CPU was the least of his problems, as was the RAM at 8GB).

Well then i asked him, why did you get this desktop: "gaming".

(HUGE FACEPALM)

I tried to explain to the kid that he could get an X99 rig with a decent GPU for the same price he payed for that AIO. He wasnt that shocked, since he could use his Xbox for gaming. (I played Watch Dogs on the Xbox at his house and the framedrops made me sick, even if Ubisoft claims that it is for a "cinematic" effect)

To top it all off, he cant even get a stable WIFI signal to his room, so i couldnt perform the Windows 10 upgrade. I told him to buy powerline adapters to fix the issue. (The internet is shocking there: £40 a month for internet that barely works, and that maxes out at 10Mb/s).

So have any of you experienced such things?

Current Rig:   CPU: AMD 1950X @4Ghz. Cooler: Enermax Liqtech TR4 360. Motherboard:Asus Zenith Extreme. RAM: 8GB Crucial DDR4 3666. 1440p is 2.5k

Yes its the more commonly used resolution called 2K, but 2K isn't 1080p. 2K = 2048×1080, 1080p = 1920×1080. 1080p is defined as FHD or Full High Definition, and 2K is defined as UHD or Ultra High Definition. I also think that 2K can handle a higher refresh rate than 1080p or something like that but could be wrong. But they are definitely not the same.

A classmate's computer stopped working it was the office computer from his mom.

He asked me to fix it I opened the case to see a Z77 mobo with a nice i7 2600k, 8gb of ram and stock cooling :o  in a so called office pc. Guess what it had a shitty 800w psu that bit the dust.

And no he did not build that one himself his parents bought it at a local shop.

I told them this pc is a beast but they were like yeah whatever it works and is fast.

Standard vs professional. Same could be said about 4k not being "true 4k". Actually, true 2k would have a lower refresh than 1080p. More pixels. Although not much more.

2K refers to 2k pixels on a horizontal screen at 16:9 aspect ratio widescreen. The only way 2K would = 1080p is if you rounded up, and though 80p isn't a huge difference it does demote the fact that they are the same.

Who the hell still uses CDs?

I didn't think anyone did but when I was working last year one of my colleagues (there was only like 6 of us and I don't think this ever came up with the other staff in conversation) was an 18 year old that still actively bought them.

Some people also bought blurays but since buying digital copies of movies is still a pain it's more understandable.

Okay, as Ive said already, I'm aware. My point was, we still call 1080p 2k similarly to how we call 3840x2160p 4k. Although it is not "true 4k" we dubbed it as such. Same for 1080p. Hardly anyone uses the technical 4k of 4096x2160.
