Experiences with non-techies

i used a bootable usb on a display laptop at a best buy once.... i got kicked out for hacking.... all i did was boot into a live cd of linux to see how it would look on the system....(i never did get my flash drive back.)

like i think they legitimatley thought i was hacking into something just because i did that lol

LOL They probably don't even know what a bootable USB was.

I bet if I asked my mum what a graphics card was she couldnt guess

Out of context from another thread, but it reminded me of a guy from highschool.

Rewind to 2003! Bruce Almighty just came out and dumbguy said Carrey's Saleen S7 was actually a McLaren F1, when I pointed out the difference he got angry and said I was wrong. Good stuff.

We're walking past the IT block, there is a pile of old computers on the grass because our school liked looking like shit, dumbguy points into an open case and says "Look, you can see the hard disks" (they all had their single hard disks removed and he was pointing at the power supply)

"That's the power supply, look at the cables"

"No, those are to hook up the floppy and CD drives to the hard disk"

"That's not how it works"

"My dad bought a computer last year, I know what I'm talking about"

"We've had a computer at home since 1996 and my dad has worked in the industry since the '70s"

"What does industry have to do with computers?"

"*sigh audibly* the computer industry, coding etc."

"Well I looked in our computer a lot so I know what the bits are all for"

I think when I brought it up again a week or so later he was very subdued and changed the subject quite quickly. He was one of those *this is how I think *thing* works, which makes it fact, so I am right and everyone else is wrong* people. He also didn't understand that the moon does actually rotate, but in a way that we only see the same side, his main argument being "But why do we only see one side?" despite it being explained multiple times by our science teacher... I thankfully lost contact with him after school ended :)

How did she make it fall off the table? Doesn't the Chromebook have rubber feet or something?

We still have to carry some textbooks or notebooks and folders around and her chromebook was on top of a binder and some folders so it slid off, taking everything but the binder with it.

Recently I acquired a new friend who's into gaming and some other stuff. I'm currently not entirely sure if he's non-techy or he is but lazy af but here goes:

He has a laptop which is several years old with top of the line specs of that generation. (GPU is the 5000 mobility series). He's running Windows 7 with absolutely no updates done to it and no service pack installed. His AMD driver is also still the pre-installed one. He never updated anything... Asked him why he doesn't update, he told me all the updates do is slow down the computer...

As to HOW I found out? This is even dumber. Told him about the new unreal tournament and how you can play it for free. He downloaded it and tried launching it. It said it needed service pack 2 to run. Instead of updating, he ran the launcher in compatibility mode, interestingly enough, it worked although I was cringing super hard.

At school, he plays devil may cry and complains about the low fps. I did tell him how he really should update his OS and GPU driver but so far he still hasn't done so and continues to complain about the low frame rates. K DEN.

BTW, this guy does at least have some sort of tech knowledge, he's smart enough to know how to configure a PS4 controller to play devil may cry on PC.

Oh yea, this guy for whatever reason, prefers to play games on PS4 instead of PC. He understands PC is superior but still prefers consoles... Alrighty then (He has a newer laptop at home with a 860M)

My friend (I built a pc for him) had just finished a day of playing Fallout 4 when he touched his GPU and burned his finger. Instead of acting like a normal person and opening temperature monitoring or not caring and letting it cool down (the pc was off) he decided that the best course of action was to uninstall the GPU, put it in his freezer for 15 minutes before then reinstalling it without checking for water/condensation. Luckily, he didn't kill the GPU but he did manage to disconnect the HDD, which then took him half an hour to reinstall. (judging from the "my pc wont recognize the hdd" to "nvm I fixed it" texts).

No..Nobody or even common sense told him that computers give off heat, and all hot objects need time to cool down before being safe to touch?

Why did he have a sudden desire to touch the GPU in the first place?

I asked him, and he said "Because I want to make sure they aren't overheating"

Common sense isn't my friend's strong suit, and he's rather forgetful.

He seems like someone who wouldn't be able to properly judge if what he felt was excessive or not anyways, so probably no much point in that.  Like, some electronics can take well over 100 deg C, but he would think it's too hot because it felt that way.  But I guess he's also the type that wouldn't realize that first thing :)

I think he is right about this, my thinkpad edge 15 gets slower and slower with each update, once it even couldn't get past "welcome", only reinstall fixed it.

Yes it was a pirated windows( :D ), but even then...

I just won't update anymore my gaming PC, not only for the reasons above, but for also windows 10- M$ will 100% put the spyware on windows 7.

So - as a friend was troubleshooting his PSU this week I got several gems from him.

#1
Him: My shuts off after a bit of gaming and PSU is hot to the touch!
Me: Likely overheating - try cleaning - the fan is normally enough to cool it though.
Him: Fan ain't spinning
Me: Hmm - better get a new one then - yours is a cheapo and poking around inside is hazardous
Him: I'll just change the fan, don't worry.
Me: No, no you don't just open a PSU with 0 knowledge.
Him: Dude, chill.

#2 - 1 hour later
Him: *sends link* is this a good PSU?
Me: *looks at 5$ used cheapo* Fuck no! - get this *links a 20$ DeepCool (he has a VERY small budget)
Him: 20$? Fuck off. Not paying 20$ for a PSU TopKek!
Me: Don't cheap out on it - this one is decent, has the needed connectors and is 80+ so less heat
Him: Are those PCs good btw?
Me: What PCs?
Him: The ones on the page - listed for 80-90$ - can they run CS:GO?
Me: Friend - those are just cases
Him: WTF? 80$ FOR A CASE? BULLSHIT!

#3 On the next day
Him: I'm buying a new PC - is 3GHz dual core, 4GB RAM and 1GB GPU good?
Me: What exact models?
Him: I don't know - I'm looking at this *sends link to 300$ pre-built from local version of Best Buy or Walmart*
Me: Fuck no, that's an iGPU and a Celeron!
Him: But is it good?
Me; NO!
Him: Will it run CS:GO??
Me: No.... Let me build you a decent PC with an A10 for CS:GO and such
Him: Dude, chill. I got this.
Me: No, no you don't...
Him: I'll just change my PSU's fan!
Me: I told you already, it's dangerous!
Him: Dude, chill!

My little brother the other day came up to me while doing research on both YouTube and New Egg for my new build. This is the conversation that followed. Him: What are you looking at. Me: Computer stuff. Him: Why? Me: Because all the computers that I have now a slow (true, both my Mac's have huge bottlenecks) Him: There slow, because you bloat them Me: ...... I have no idea what he ment by that but still, when has the amount of data on a mechanical harddrive affect the speed of said drive?

Actually, the outside of the hard drive disk is the fastest part, so the more data you have on it, thew more that gets written on the slower part. So technically, the amount of data you have on the hard drive does effect the speed.

Send him a link to a video showing the dangers of capacitors, if that wont persuade him from not opening his PSU, nothing will.

I keep forgetting to post this but my mom works for the state library in CT. She recently got a work laptop. Her trackpad wouldn't work when she went on a work trip. I asked why she didn't use her wireless mouse. She was told to not use anything not supplied by the state in case the computer gets a virus from the mouse. but here's the kicker. I went online to see if there was a solution. I went to click on chrome and she said, "No. The IT person said you have to use IE". Get this, The IT women (you would think she would know better) at work said that IE is more secure because it updates less often. I laughed so hard.

P.S. My mom isn't stupid with computer even though I am the acknowledge-able person in my house. She knows that what the women said was BS but when you could get fired if something happened to the pc, you might just wanna follow the rules.

You live in CT?
