NVIDIA Readying GM200-based GeForce GTX 980 Ti

Not always, the GTX 660 was a full GK106 and 660Ti was a cut down GK104, and the 560Ti 448 core was a cut down GF110. They could call it GTX 980Ti 3072 core, in reality it probably will be GTX 980Ti because all marketing cares about is how easy for the consumers to tell where a product belongs in Nvidia's catalog, i.e. 980Ti > 980.

Well then you're extrapolating from a sample size of one. The GTX 780 Ti is the only top of the line Ti card. Unless you want to take us all the way back to the Geforce 4 series.

It's just a name, it's mostly marketing, the only X80 Ti before was the 780 Ti, there isn't a tradition that says a Ti is a fully unlocked core, they can name it whatever makes sense for them. I don't think they ever planned to release something between the 980 and Titan X, if they do release one, it will be a reaction to the new AMD lineup.

 

You nailed it, the naming scheme is just marketing. Calling it the 980Ti makes most sense (marketing wise), this card will be a response to the 390x under cutting the price point of the TitanX yet possibly performing competitively. I'd sooner they didnt release it. I bought the original Titan, still use it in my FT03 build with a 2600k. Then built a LAN rig with the 4790k + GTX980.  I'd rather AMD had the limelight until Pascal lands. Drive down prices and bring some balance back to the market.

Then it wouldn't be faster than the Titan X as the rumors state. But it's possible. Certainly makes more sense than an ever bigger Maxwell chip.

The 980 already has a big, unlocked chip. The Titan X already has a big, unlocked chip. Why would Nvidia roll out another GM2xx chip for a single 980 Ti? 

They're gonna save that core for the next run of cards, if even that. Pascal shows up next year so who is to say that Nvidia doesn't just sit on their ass and do nothing till then? 

 

They could very well do a cut down GM200 (GM204?) and call it the 980Ti. "Ti" cards don't have to been fully unlocked big chips, they just need to be faster than their non-Ti counterparts.

I don't see any reason why they could not call it the 980ti. Sure it might break any kind of pattern that they have going with naming vs chip specs but who really cares about that. I would not expect it any time soon though because Nvidia will want to milk titan x for as long as possible.

GM200 fully unlcoked will be the GTX1080 maybe a 1080Ti and everything below will be slight variations and 900 series rebrands.

And quiet honestly non of those cards will be worth buying anyways as Pascal will be such a huge jump that unless you can blow the money it would be non sense to upgrade one gen before it.

Give it like a 200w TDP, 6gb of vram, and 2816 cuda cores or something along the lines of that.

 

 

It wouldn't be the first time we've seen them cut down chips to make other products.

Not to mention they have a big price gap between 980 and titan X, they could make something that costs ~750 as a middle ground.

 

 

Hell, they could even just make a 6gb 980 TI with a fully unlocked GM200, and still charge $800.   People would buy it that don't need the Titan X's features & 12gb, yet people still would buy the titan X just because "more is better" philosophy.

regardless of the name (1080p Ti, 980 Ti, Nein-80), the next nVIDIA vs AMD 28nm flagship battle is going to be awesome. both are power hungry, heat producing, facemelting flagship chips that are both pushing 28nm limits. seriously, whats not to love about flagship gpu battles (besides the verbal diarrhea from fanboys)?

Seems to me like it would easily fit in around ~750-800$.    Most 980's are around the 550$ mark, and the titan X is $1,000.

 

If they give it 6gb of vram, people would have an incentive to buy it over the 980 (because it would be faster, and have more VRAM) and it would still give people an incentive to buy the titan X, because of the VRAM & titan name.

They don't until Q2/Q3 2016 with Padcal. Neither TSMC nor Samsung/GloFo have their 16/14nm FF processes ready for a high power/performance node. To exceed GM 200 would require Nvidia exceed TSMC's Max die size limits.

The GM200 chip is already pushing what TSMC can produce, its pretty amazing they're even getting enough yields for a Titan X. 

 

They have nothing on current processes. Pascal is a new process, more dense chips. The only thing a Maxwell Refresh can accomplish is marginal performance and efficiency gains for a placeholder 10xx series of cards.

The GTX 780 wasn't unlocked I believe, which is why they made the 780 Ti

I think that the 980 Ti is a case of people getting hyped up over nothing. There's no place for this card in the market. Here, let me bring up some points Jay made last night.

 

• Some custom PCB 980s get up into the $650 - $800 price range. Then there's the Titan, which is $999, giving a gap between the custom board 980 market and the Titan. Calling it the 980 Ti would mean that it's also built on GM204, which means it would not have the same architecture as GM200, so it would have to be priced less than the Titan (<$999). This would mean that it would have to be priced around $750 - $800, which would undercut the custom board 980 market. How would you create a 980 Ti that would not destroy the market created by the board partners?
• It can't be faster than the Titan if it's on GM204, so it would have to be less than $999, but there's nowhere for it to fit comfortably between the Titan and the custom board market without killing one off.
• There was no 480 Ti, no 580 Ti and no 680 Ti. The 780 Ti was the first x80 Ti card.

If anything, sites like Tweaktown are using the 980 Ti to get clicks, therefore views, and therefore money. Of course, we'll have to see what happens this summer, but I bet you guys there will be no 980 Ti.
