NVIDIA Readying GM200-based GeForce GTX 980 Ti

Just because Ti has ALWAYS been used with variants of the same chip doesn't mean Nvidia can release a GM200 980 Ti this time around. Hell call it 980 X if that makes you guys happy.

They haven't always been variants of the same chip. ;)

Won't be a 980 Ti.  Ti is always unlocked.  980 is as unlocked as it ever will be.

You are correct, sir.  The laws and policies that govern world-wide commercial law state that Nvidia cannot name any more cards the 980 Ti.  It is against these rules which were put in place to prevent companies from partaking in pure and utter madness.  If they did, commerce would begin to deteriorate, chaos would ensue, and riots would begin in the streets.  There are clear reasons why men put these laws into place.

It would be an utter travesty if Nvidia applied a name to a new video card which did not follow the exact and specific rules of the past.  Quite honestly, it would be a perversion of the highest order.  I would be absolutely sick to my stomach as everyone should if this were to occur.  No one can honestly support this vile behavior.  Purely disgusting if you ask me, to name their new card a 980 Ti which indeed has higher specs than the standard 980, but not in the "unlocked GPU" portion of the product.

Nvidia better not do this.  I agree with your comment--it is absolutely impossible and illegal to name the card 980 Ti.

As for the 'no niche' in their lineup argument, I dunno about the US, but seems like there's plenty of space in the high-end over here in Canada.  Even the nice MSI/ROG 980's are ~$700 here, and the Titan X is currently going to be priced at $1350.  Although I really hope that's a Gouge The Early Adopter price, because it would make it significantly cheaper to order direct from across the border...

It should be a 980 Ti so nvidia can just die shrink the whole 9 series and rename them 10 series cards

With conversion rates right now, it doesn't make it much cheaper to buy from the US. Then there's good ol' shipping charges and other such fees the Canadian governments loves to nail us with. :P

It's why I still find it cheaper to just go buy my PC parts from Canada Computers instead of ordering from Newegg or where ever.

In most cases it's equal (and longer delivery times) or a loss true, for instance it's not worth ordering a 980 from the US with tariff+exchange.  But the Titan X is actually especially overpriced in Canada right now.  If you order from the US, you'd be saving $100-150.  Card's still hella overpriced, but there it is.

While Ti doesn't mean a fully unlocked chip and the 780 was the first and only Ti that was an unlocked version of the same chip. All others are cut down chips.

My argument is that it maybe a 980 Ti and have a cut down GM200, as others have stated the manufacturing process to make the GM200 is difficult and they are pushing the limits of the 28nm chip. They possibly wouldn't be yielding the highest amount of fully unlocked Titan X chips and where are all the other binned chips going to end up. Why not make a cut down GM200 980 Ti and launch it at the same time as the 390X. They could also cut the price of the 980 by $100 to drive even more sales while rising the price of the 980 Ti to the $750-800 region and then make a place for the card. The board partners wont mind if they get a cut from Nvidia's end and still make the close to or the same profit margins, then being able the capitalize on a whole other card. I know they might save the left over GM200's for the next series of lower cards but that would seem like a waste. If the 390X is as fast as the rumours and at a reasonable price Nvidia may need another card between now and Pascal to try and hold their share of the GPU sales.
