How stupid am I?

So I just spent the past 2 hrs working on a computer for my mom to find out that it won't boot. It'll start up and get to the windows is starting screen and then crash. I just realized the reason. I'm running a G3258 on an Asus H81M-D Plus and I didn't update the BIOS. I just wasted my parents money. FML

 

*Edit After further troubleshooting I found the problem was just Windows got corrupt(first time building so I got scared and overreacted). When I took the drive from my laptop it booted just fine. Tonight I'll just do a clean install of Windows.

Install windows on another computer with the HDDyou want to use and don't activate. Then boot into safe mode to get some drivers in and load the new bios version and installer on a sub and try to install it to get the cpu working,

Either that or get a compatible cpu.

See if you can borrow someone's Haswell CPU temporarily, or even go into your local computer shop (providing you have one) and ask possibly

I was just recycling an old HDD. Would that still work?

Get the cheapest compatible eBay CPU you can get. 

 

Update bios and job done.

A lot of motherboards you can flash the bios without going into it, just put the updated BIOS on a flash drive and find out how to auto flash from the USB drive

It's easy to miss as they don't show you on screen in big red writing or warn you before you buy it.

If the CPU was incompatible, it wouldn't even post at all (I bought an E8500 and installed it on my P5K-VM motherboard, and had the computer refuse to post, re-installing the Pentium 4 630 and doing a BIOS update solved the problem). More than likely you've got a different problem.

You cant boot if your BIOS doesnt support your CPU...

its as if you dont have a CPU in the motherboard...how will you boot if you dont have a CPU?

the only way to update it is to get a CPU that is supported, or if possible (usually on high end motherboards) you can use aUSB bios flashback which doesnt require a CPU or GPU or RAM

Start by using 1 stick of RAM at a time, its possible that a stick is faulty. If that fails, try different RAM slots. (I had to do this when my Legacy rigs got random BSOD, turns out that 2 of the 3 512MB sticks had hairline fractures)

well it sounds like the old ide/ahci thing if it crashes right at the windows loading screen. get in the bios and switch. and do a bios update while ur at it if you are concerned about it. the bios update is done in the bios

I only have one stick of DDR3. I can get into the BIOS and it reads the RAM. DIMM_A1: G-Skill 4096MB 16MHz is what it says

Hmmm, Try reinstalling Windows next, if your recycling the HDD from another computer and leaving its copy of Windows on it, it will cause the problems your having now.
