Lollipop's succesor, 'Android M', to be released this year.

Redpalmtree

Ceasar Sangupta at Google spoke about what he calls Android M. He says that, unlike version 5.1, which is also to

be released very soon, 'M' will be the next major update for Android, and it will be released in 2015.

Android 5.1 is, in his words, a small update in comparison to the upcoming 'M'. He spoke only of performance increases and bug-fixes. Previous rumours suggested that 5.1 will bring back the 'Silent Mode' that was absent in 5.0.

Google also stated earlier that they are working on a fix for the problems experienced with internal memory in Lollipop. Google has confirmed that 5.0 uses too much internal memory, resulting in application closing on their own and/or crashing.  5.1 will be released alongside three new Android-One devices in Indonesia.

I like this. Google is clearly putting in effort into android and in my opinion it has a lot of potential. I'm sure that there are sceptical people out there and that's great too. I'm sceptical myself about big companies like Google. Still, updating and showing effort like this can only be a good thing.

I experienced a lot of direct improvements over the years while using Android, so I definately like where this is going.

I apologize for it being in Dutch, I couldn't find an English source.

I surprised that Google would use 5.1 as a minor update instead of 5.0.x as they usually do.

Historically, Android as always used x.x.x for bug fixes, x.x for new releases, and x.0 for large overhauls.

"Minor" is relative. Most updates are not as big of an overhaul as 5.0 was.

It's all and good with Google Android, but the phones won't support it. The manufacturers most of the times are a huge pain in the ass for new software. Sometimes they even make it worst by applying unnecessary apps and bling bling :D. Recently a chart was posted showing 1.7% usage of the newest version of android. If there won't be an easy update way all their effort will be wasted.

Let me guess: It will end up being called Android M&M. Can you think of any sweets starting with M?

Marshmallow

Milkshake

Marzipan

Muffin

Mint

Mooncake

Miguelitos

Macaroon

Meringue

My bet is on Milkshake or Marshmallow.

I don't think that their effort will be wasted in any way as long as they keep innovating. Updates don't just mean that your phone will need more storage and more RAM. It could also mean updates that actually make Android lighter than before.

Anyways. If they do it right, they will set standards for other to compete with. That is what it's about in my opinion.

I'd bet on Marshmallow, Milkshake kinda competes with froyo.

Android version names go by snack foods.

L isn't getting a serious successor any time soon. Updates and tweaks, sure, but definitely no Gingerbread > Jelly Bean or anything like that.

I'm still waiting for 5.0 on my G3. I really wish Google could take a page out of Apple's book and make it so carriers didn't "need" to change things beyond the bands.

Doesn't the issue lie with the company that makes the phones? you can't expect google to make a 5.0 version of Touchwiz for Samsung, or the LG skin in this matter. The companies have to do that themselves and this is what causes the delay.. right?

4.2, and specially 4.3, was quite minor updates. 5.0.x updates are just for bug fixes, which they've had with 5.0.1 and 5.0.2

The Carrier is the one who causes the biggest delays. LG phones have had it for a while, but especially in the US, it's crawling slow.

Malicious

Malware

Malfunction

as long as they wont fix several critical issues. I know they are working hard on it but I still wouldnt consider Android as a secure device. (Take my comment with a grain of salt).
