USB 3.1 and Type C shown off by MSI at CES!

Norman_the_Owl

Not sure about that, the Z97 board you saw was also called Z97A

Maybe the A is just to indicate that there's usb 3.1 on it?

The second board you saw there with the gpu on it was an X99 board

Pause the video at 56 seconds or so.

You see the background image on the screen as X99A, it has 8 dimm slots and not enough PCI-E slots.

Currently MSI has a X99S board that is full ATX.

EDIT: In the video description.

on the X99A Gaming 9 ACK motherboard shipping in February or March.

Why didn't they make two sizes like every single connector before this one?

There are two sizes, but if you can demo both the new form factor and new performance at once, why not?

Um, edit this please. All USB 3.1 connectors are USB 3. 3.1 is a hardware revision, not something that can be fixed on old USB 3.0 ports.

the ports did not get any hardware change only the controller chips are newer. my point is that USB 3.1 is not only type-c any old USB 3 port is USB 3.1 complaint, it only depends on if the USB controller chip supports it.

Last I knew they were adding 4 data lanes. When did this change/do you have a source on this?

Great... Now we get small and fragile connectors even on motherboards?

I really hope this is the micro version.

Unless you're trying to slam it in, why would this be fragile? Be careful with it like you do with any other electronic things and it should be fine.

Looks too loose, Ryan used no force to plug it in and vice versa.

The connector looks WAY too weak. He should not have been able to remove the cable with one hand. The last thing I need is my mouse coming unplugged every time I move it. Also the connector design is poorly thought out, the first time a kid shoves a usb drive into the port a bit too roughly(because face it, kids treat computers like garbage) the center pin will break rendering the port useless. USB ports need to withstand being used 1000s of times during their lifetime and type C looks fragile. Bad standard is bad and I hope it follows the path of firewire.

I don't know about you, but I don't want to be leaning over at the back of my computer trying to reef a connector out, only to punch a hole in my wall because I put too much effort in because it's too damn "tough" because they're trying to pander to elitists like yourselves.

And Me1z, calm down. If you're worried about a kid breaking this connector, you should be worried about him breaking all other connectors as well and maybe you should teach that kid to be more careful around computers. Also, if your mouse is coming unplugged every time you move it, there's something wrong with your setup, not the connector.

"He should not have been able to remove the cable with one hand."

Yes he absolutely should! My computer is backed right up about 10cm away from my wall and to pull USB devices out of the back, I have to lean over my desk. Do you think I want to use both hands in this scenario? No, don't be stupid.

Dunno if you've thought about this, but if a connector is easy to pull out, doesn't it make sense that if there was any rough handling involved, the connector would slip out before it broke off?

If they were really serious about implementing this, I wish they had given the motherboard more than one port. We need like six of these things. It's not Thunderbolt or eSATA. It's freaking USB,

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me when there are no devices that currently use the connector. Where there finally are, no one is going to throw away their type A devices for type C; it will be a slowly implemented feature.

It's for phones, it'd better be small.

Its actually for everything.

Why didn't they make two sizes like every single connector before this one?

Because it's not needed. It's the same connector on each end. Also think about ultrabooks.

Designed with phones in mind though.

Thinner and portable devices. Ultrabooks, tablets, phones, etc.

If it works in something like that it'll be fine stationary on a desktop.

USB 3.1 is NOT ONLY the type-c, all old USB 3 ports are USB 3.1 ports. they type-c is a new USB 3/3.1 connector.

Wrong. You'll need a new controller for 3.1 and currently the could connection certified to support it is type c. You can do many other things with 3.1 and type c as well like displayport.

Don't knock it till you try it. That is a pre production sample on a display floor with likely a pre production cable as well. Also maybe he didn't plu it in all the way so he could easily pull it out and flip it around. On a side note if ur using a mouse tether the cable it a better experience on both ends.

I doubt their all that serious. It'll probably get two ports when launch just like first gen 3.0.

Umm what? They plan to have everything transition to type c. And it is for the better, now the EU just needs to convince apple.

You don't need to throw out type A you could on need a passive adapter to chance pinout. Since nearly all cables are A to B something you only really need a C to A pigtail.

usb type a, b , and c are all 3.1 complaint, with out any physical change. USB 3.1 does NOT need more pins, they uses the same pins just a new controller to gain speeds. USB type c is just a new connector for USB 3/3.1 standard. desktops will not replace all USB ports to type c, they will use type A and C for USB 3.1. the only thing that type A might not have is the 100W rating.

If I buy a raid HDD box I don't want a type C connector I want a Type B or A.

Type A will always be more durable then type C so type c can never replace it.

Edit: just check some documentation. USB type is the only connector that supports USB power delivery 2.0 (100W) and Display-port functionality.

Not much else to say, I'm very happy about this. These are the revisions we're looking for, take note of this gigabyte...

Jump to the 0:49 time line.

For the RAID 0 haters, they have a RAID 0 with two SSD's to benchmark USB 3.1, so go out and kick yourself in the pants if you decided against it.

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

I remove my flash drive from my computer with one hand. Same with literally every other USB device I have. Mind you, this is USB2 and 3. Same with microusb.

No... Read that all again.

Me1z: "He should not have been able to remove the cable with one hand."

Me: "Yes he absolutely should! My computer is backed right up about 10cm away from my wall and to pull USB devices out of the back, I have to lean over my desk. Do you think I want to use both hands in this scenario? No, don't be stupid."

Me replying to something else: "I don't know about you, but I don't want to be leaning over at the back of my computer trying to reef a connector out, only to punch a hole in my wall because I put too much effort in because it's too damn "tough" because they're trying to pander to elitists like yourselves."
