Anyone Else Think "My Rig" Sounds Uncool?

CDHoward

The word always reminds me of a chubby truck driver, or something. I can't help it. Not exactly cool, though.

I never refer to my PC as "My rig". I simply call it "My Machine".

I call my computer "The computer"

I know, pretty crazy.

But rig sounds stupid, I agree.

So I'm not alone then.

(Also, I sometimes/quite often simply call mine "Computer" as well).

"My set-up" sounds OK, I think.

Hey, as somebody with trypophobia, your profile pic kinda makes me shiver... Also, don't google trypophobia for your own good. Just trust me.

Also, I say my setup as well.

Well "rig" refers to the truck, not the fat slob inside it. I've never referred to my computer as a 'rig', but I suppose I can see the appeal of likening one to a powerful piece of machinery.

I just call my whole set up my joint, but call my desktop "Sabertooth 1.5V in White".

I say "my PC".

Also I don't get what's wrong with trypophobia

Trypophobia is hell. I can't even use too much soap when I shower because the bubbles scare me.. eurrghghghg

For any onlookers who don't know what Tryphobia is: Do YOU Have Trypophobia?

Not watching or looking at the thumbnail as I assume I would probably pass out xD

But most of the videos or image results are overdramatized. I genuinely do have the phobia in the extreme, so much so that I feel uncomfortable. Those dramatic versions basically make me feel mental...

Don't even get me started on people who never clean their pores out... absolute hell for me to look at them... ooh, and some sponges...

It does make my scalp itch a tad when I watch it. But I don't think I have the phobia, to be honest.

I feel like the only way to clear my head and feel any better after those images is to simply take a scalding hot shower. Even then I'll still have goosebumps.

....I probably need help for this xD

I'm going to start calling it "my schlong" now because of your post.

This is the best solution.

But even so, mate: I just don't think conflating an unwieldy, scruffy truck and a finely built, sexy, advanced computer is good, or desirable.

Just imho, of course.

I call mine a contraption.

I think Rig in this case is short for "Rigged", which in modern slang is used to describe something that is one-sided or overpowered by design. Someone might say their gaming PC is Rigged, and eventually call it their "Rig."

@Briggsy

I disagree, mate. I think people say it in an Oil Rig-type way (as an Oil Rig resembles a test bench, maybe?).

But mostly some say it in a Truck Rig-way.

Either way, it just doesn't sound right.

@Bynming

"Sophisticated", then, might have been a better word to use.

Hm, well uncool sounds derogatory whereas sophisticated is a bit of a pompous compliment :P

My"rig" does sound quite.. odd. I usually just refer to it as "My Computer." What I like to do also is refer to it by the case. "My Phantom." Because you refer to a car by what it is as a shell, but what powers it under the hood is separate from its name!
