How much money do you really Need for a good pc

I think that you need about 500-600 $ to run basic games and to still keep enough money to save for good peripherals and future upgrades .

what do you think

$800 for me.

Depends on where you live too, extra taxes and whatnot are costly.

£1500+ for one that will last a good ammount of time ( 3 years or so).

My current desktop was around £2000 for everything including monitors, and other peripherals. I dont plan on replacing it for at least another 1 or 2 years.

Depends on location as prices can vary quite a bit.  But I would say more than $600.  I spent almost £600 on my PC and I still took a shortcut or two.

For a good 1080p gaming rig, $800 is enough, if you are fine with high settings, and medium on some games, then a $600 PC can do wonders.

I agree with this range, should be enough to get you going with pretty much any game if you're willing to lower quality in some of the newest ones.

Mine was less than $500 and I am sure it will last for more than 3 years, it might not be as powerful or as nice to use but it can do the same stuff as a hugely expensive PC.

Main PC:

ASUS F1A55-M LX, AMD A6-3500, (2x2)gb Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3 1600mhz, Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm,
Corsair CX430M, Cooler Master Elite 343, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Netbook:

Lenovo Ideapad S10-2, Intel Atom N280, (1x1)gb DDR2 667mhz, WD Scorpio Blue 250gb 5400rpm, Zorin OS 9 Lite

I personally prefer to start with a solid base of higher end mobo/cpu/psu, and upgrade incrementally over time on the rest of the components. An unlocked i5/i7/fX8xxx cpu will likely be more than capable for high end GPUs 5 years from now, when 4k gaming has replaced 1080p as standard fair and dx12/Mentle have cut out a lot of cpu overhead. heck sandy bridge, even Nehalem cpus are still rockin high end rigs with new GPUs.

I think somewhere around $700-$1,000 for the PC itself (not including display, mouse/keyboard, speakers/headphones/microphone, other peripherals) is where rubber hits the road at 1080p for 2014 AAA titles. older titles, or less intensive gaming and you can probably cut your cost down to $400-$600.

Most games don't require the horsepower of games used in benchmarks such as FarCry 3 or Crysis 3

You can get away with an Athlon X4 750K and a entry-level GPU like the R7 260, but it's not ideal.

why do so many good cases only come in black and white

I think US $750 is good, including shipping (From Newegg). I'm able to ship everything to a family member's address tax-free.

play on a low enough resolution, and you could theoretically play bf4 on a potato.
