Jibo, the world's first family robot developed at MIT

Mister Snow

Ever wanted your personal Wall-e? Well, we are getting closer to it.

Cynthia Breazeal, an MIT professor and one of the pioneers of social robotics, has unveiled “the world’s first family robot.” Called Jibo, the all-white desktop-sitting robot has more than a passing resemblance to a certain robot from a recent animated Pixar movie. The robot, which will cost around $500 when it’s released, will have a range of abilities that will hopefully make it the perfect companion to have around the house — such as telling stories to kids, automatically taking photos when you pose, easy messaging and video calling, providing reminders for calendar entries, and companionship through emotional interaction

They are trying to fund it through Indiegogo for now and here is the commercial:

Now the big caveat: Jibo is currently just a prototype, and Breazeal and co are using Indiegogo to raise funds and interest for a commercial release in late 2015/early 2016. It costs $500 for a consumer version, or $600 for a developer Jibo with the SDK.

What do you guys think, would you buy one if it's good as the one on the video?

It seems like its 24/7 connected to the internet i don't feel comfortable because of all this NSA snooping going around.

Sent from my Nexus 7 (2013).

But it doesn't look like it can move around by itself and therefore would likely end up being more of a burden than an assistant...

Is this another robot thats going to be in our house soon like all the others since the 50's

two big red flags here

1.) automatically taking photos when you pose,

2.) and companionship through emotional interaction

and as someone who's studied in the field number 2 is still a real tricky one

Coolio. But as mentioned, you would need to move it around, and wherever you want it, you would have to have a power socket nearby. Cool concept though. Really exciting.

Sorry for the convoluted speech pattern.

"He can take pictures and video so you can put down your camera and be in the picture"

Yeah, carrying that thing around everytime you want to take a picture or video is much easier than using your phone or a DSLR on a tripod. Wayyyy convenient, yo.

"Mom, I dropped the jibo, and his motors stopped working"

I'd love to see what the NSA could do with that little guy! Don't leave it in the bedroom.

I always guarantee that no more than 50% of what I say is useful.
