Can we lay off the sexual harassment jokes please

17 minutes ago, oaktree_b said:

So you let a sexual harassment joke slip into the TechLinked video on April 3rd... Too soon buds, um rather poor taste. I'll let this one slip as a late April Fools joke, but, do better guys.

Dude, they're a bunch of Tech Gods (cuz you all hold them on that pedestal) who are huge fish in their tiny little pond.

Of COURSE they're going to joke that up.  They are literally untouchable.

Hell, Luke did a 69 joke in the apology video!  Which we all know was PR bullshit, but still.

You, sir, are wasting your time.   You should know better.

Maybe I didn't listen long enough (I'm at work), but I heard a joke about an affair, not harassment.

You may still find that inappropriate in some way, but I think it's a big difference from harassment. I don't like the way we casually toss some of these terms around these days. It lessens the meaning.

Agreed.

But on the flip, I would like them to produce videos that don't NEED to include some sort of sexual innuendo, that's what she said, or "elbow, know what I mean?" schtick.

In the secret shopper video I just watched, he had to reference the extra 2 inches of foam thickness needed for safeguarding the PC in transit as "2 more inches thick... know what I mean?".

<removed by staff>

It's non-stop.  I would wager at least 75% of all LTT videos include a 69 comment, she said, know what I mean, or someone off screen yelling something.

One offs are fine, and we all do it, but it's almost like a checkbox they have on the writing for these things.  Sexual Innuendo, check!!!  You know in real life if you have an Uncle or coworker that always did it, you'd be like "Uncle Bob isn't invited to Thanksgiving, right?  Please?".   Or don't invite Tom to lunch again, he's annoying.

I'm old, I guess.  Maybe the young crowd loves it and can't get enough dick and pussy jokes.  Ignore me then.

Not everything men say is "sexual harassment".

...dude they were literally making a consent joke [and multiple at that with the scotch joke].  That kind of joke is generally in poor taste, but even worse when the has been a whole drama about drinking and consent accusations.  Making light of a current situation by joking about it is to an extent almost saying that it doesn't matter [or that that type of behavior to is to joke about]

Honestly, this is even worse than when they joked about OceanGate in iirc the same week that they announced the deaths of those onboard.

It's joking about consent, yes it is about an affair as well but saying the wife consented is the part that is a bit wrong; then it double downs on the joke by saying alcohol means he will stick it in [which can in this case when joking about consent be actually talking about sexual assault].

For context, not sure if you have seen what's going on, but there was a YouTuber (part of the Minecraft iirc) who was accused of not getting consent at a party and there was a whole thing about what exactly is consent and people taking sides on such [in regards to what happens when someone is drunk].

Using the word consent in general isn't the same as making a joke about sexual consent (or lack there of) with a partner. I just hard disagree it's a consent joke in the manner you mean. Again, if we want to talk about sexual innuendo and blue humor in general, that's a fine conversation. But I don't agree that it's making light of consent at all.

Well it's a joke about "consent" when they make reference to "because you told your wife..." That makes the topic they are joking about consent [in this case "consent" being towards an affair].

With the addition of saying after that "You put some scotch in me, and I put myself in women".

That isn't sexual innuendo, it's a joke about sexual harassment/assault regarding consent.  In the literal sense  a woman who recently claimed to be drunk at a party and not giving/being asked for consent is a major news story within the YouTube community.  Again, the previous sentence is something that has happened within the last few weeks.  The joke runs way too close to what has happened.

I don't get you to understand this, but when you have someone in your life who has been stalked, brutally sexually assaulted, and harassed; and the response from cops being essentially "what did you do to initiate it", you learn that there is a massive culture of trivializing sexual assault/harassment as victim blaming.  By joking about it as well it still perpetuates the concept that it's something to be joked about and not necessarily taking seriously.

So I won't paste excerpt here because of its nature. But my timestamp starts with what it fine (to me). Its very old joke and tied in part to American higher end lifestyle of 90s and early 00s. Also portrayed in media of that era. Its also bit poor taste, but not worst and probably would have been fine (since its about lying/cheating and nothing beyond that). But latter part of that joke goes over, talking about intoxication and what men supposedly do when that happens. With the wording making it sound like what happens does happen regardless of the other person agreeing.

While it might read out like that to all, being intoxicated has been very commonly used as excuse by men when they are investigated for sexual abuse during parties. You can search up some notable cases, some of them are too political to discuss here.

it's 100% making light of consent, and with the background and examples LTT has shown in the past, it's definitely locked in.  If it was my mom saying it, sure I could give you that.  But these guys?  Come on.

Surely having your wife as head of HR and actively being against and shaming the idea of unionising wont have bad consequences on your companies culture and practices. Surely.

Emphasis mine. This is exactly what I mean though. Consent is just a word that means 'permission' in general. Of course, an affair doesn't have your partners permission by definition. But it's just that, the generic definition of permisison (or consent). A very different meaning.

To take that to some definition of consent over the sexual act between 2 people requires some sort of projection/extrapolation. Likewise with the scotch joke. Saying you have lots of sex when you're drunk has absolutely zero to do with partner consent. It can, if you're talking about the other party being too intoxicated to give consent.  But to poke fun at yourself over bad decisions when drunk is still separate from assautling a women. We're pasting this stuff in there, as far as I can tell.

As stated earlier, I'm all for discussion of whether LTT videos need this toilet humor at all. That's a fine stance to have.

But when you make a cheeky joke about an affair, or about yourself  being promiscuous when you drink, and somehow trying to tie that to "sexual assault" or "joking about consent" makes literally zero sense to me. It's implying (either intentionally or unintentionally), or at least risking people inferring, that LTT made some sort of rape (or even rape adjacent) joke, and I think that couldn't be further from the truth.

I don't know man. It's just where I fall on this one. General appropriateness aside, it just seems like a reach to use some of the wording in this thread for the jokes made. I really think it's only hurting the 'cause', not helping.

We can't have that! That would be "woke" and show empathy and understand for others!! And it would also show that they're aware of SA allegations against the company recently for which they have an ongoing investigation for. And that is not "the funny" and therefor is stupid and wrong!! Everything I get a chuckle out of is something the world should enjoy and anyone who thinks otherwise is "woke" and "a snowflake" especially anyone who doesn't like jokes about forced sexual acts!!!!!!!!

/s

LTT really needs to do better, a funny haha 69 joke is one thing but some of the "edgy" jokes just push it too far.

Edit:

In this specific case it's grey area since they just say "scotch in me and I make sex with others", if the word force or an implication of coercion was in there it would 10,000% be too far but this is right on that line which pushes it right to that line if not a tad over depending on who you are.

This makes even less sense. So now you're basically admitting the words aren't the problem. It's just your feeling projected based on the "person" (?) saying them.

"these guys"? What does that even mean? Did the entire company write the script? Is your issue with the guy in the video that said it (don't know his name, sorry). Your feelings about linus?

Either it's a rape/harassment/assauly joke or it's not. I don't think it is. At all. But even if one disasgrees,  I find your reasoning in this post very illogical.
