Why would anybody need a threadripper?

So like the title says, I have been hearing about the new threadrippers and the prices are really expensive, why would people need one?

They are awesome for rendering machines that take advantage of many cores.

I need my 36-core Xeon workstation for CPU rendering and PCIe lanes. Same goes for Threadrippers. And even if they cost like $4000 now, they'll be just a couple hundred in a few years.

People who make money with their machines.  People with lots of money.  Businesses that need product vs time.

 

Same reason people buy F350 trucks.

For big workstations with ton of storage and PCIe devices for people who need this to earn money.

Not intended as a desktop replacement for your gaming PC and web browsing needs.

They are targeted at anyone who does anything that requires many cores, whether they are hobbyists or (semi-)professionals. The next step up would be Epyc, but that may not be cost effective or simply overkill. They are definitely not made with gamers in mind.

For people NOT using their PC for gaming?

 

Like...compiling and building FPGA code.

At my workplace, we ditched our old @$$ dual-Xeon (2x 20-core CPUs) FPGA Build server for a 7900X build last year... HUGE difference.

It will use ALL of the RAM, and ALL the Cores / Threads.

 

We went from a total of 40-Cores to 12-Cores...but 12-cores from 2022+...and it still cut down our times by over HALF.

A smaller FPGA build took ~17 minutes on the old Xeon set-up, new took ~8 minutes.

If we go for a higher core count ThreadRipper, it would probably reduce us into the 1 ~ 2 minute (or even less!!) range...

Anyone that needs loads of ram , or multiple video cards for Cuda / Open CL ... but may not need something as big as dual / quad epyc ...

exactly, you can see Zen 3 5600x 5800x3D vs Zen 4 7600x 7800x3D

If you play games, 7800x3D, however you'd need a new motherboard and DDR5 RAM.

 

These chips have been out for almost a year and a half. Your 5800x came out roughly three and a half years ago.

So should the 5800x last me like 3 more years before my next upgrade? I bought the 5800x in October last year

How long it lasts you is entirely down to you and your performance expectations. Is it doing what you want now? Its more than capable of handling a 3060.

I mean it runs star citizen and microsoft flight sim just fine... Maybe I'll upgrade it in a few years like to the 9th gen ryzen cpus when they come out or something

define running the games "fine", if you're not stuttering or having low FPS, you're more than fine

so im curious,  how does a couple hundred dollars xeon from a few years ago compare to say, a 5800x3d?  For gaming.  (and for video editing? )

its hard to say, lets say MFS2025 comes out and runs like 23fps on the newest i9 and you really want to play that, then no. for most other cases it'll probably be fine. ~

I really don't know, I do not do gaming. The Xeon is better for all core workloads though.

oh ok... was just wondering how it is for gaming cause people still advocate for that ("dell optiplex gaming built" or whatever) and im like why not just get a 5800x3d for 250 bucks instead??

 

granted DDTS does this optiplex thing a lot and they usually perform well enough,  even before he goes crazy with them ala:
