I spilled lemonade on the first laptop I ever had years ago, and killed it.

I learned that glasses of liquids and computers are bad ideas and waterbottles with lids (lttstore.com) are best to be used at computers.  And haven't spilled a drink killing a computer and valuable data since.

Prevention is easy and effective, a tip a father like Linus may have forgotten about. 🙂

I spilled a drink on my keyboard last year, the result - fried one of the RAM sticks. Did not know that might be possible, at least got a new stick from warranty though.

In earlier years I never spilled drinks near my PC, then last year twice, current year once. No idea what's going on.

I edit my posts more often than not

I miss the rigidity of laptops. I spilled on an old hp (Lenovo had this also) and keyboard seems to have these liquid channels that let it pass right through underneath.  I shut it off, left it for day, was completely fine.

I try to keep my desk arranged in such a way that I'd need to try very hard to spill anything into my computer itself. Keyboards though... they have suffered.

I find I'm much more likely to spill things as I get older.

Never spilled on my computer. My wife still teases me about the time I spilled a whole glass of red wine down the back of my desk, though. Never really got the stain off the wall.

Also once dropped a memory card with 1 days worth of data into a cup of freshly made coffee.... It survived 😅

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)

One huge thing: DO NOT TOUCH THE PC IF YOU SPILLED LIQUID ON IT AND IT'S ON!

Pull the plug from the wall or flip the switch on your extension cord. If you can't do either of those without touching your PC, you go and pull the fuse, if you don't know which fuse, you flip the main power switch and cut the electricity from your whole home (wait a minute, go and unplug the PC and return the power to your home).

No touchy touchy with ANY part of the PSU, not even the power switch and definedly not the cable.

The danger is that the PSU has shorted and now you have the mains power in the ground of the PC and your PC's case is now in the phase and you get a bit too intimate with it and happen to have something to do with the ground and all that juice coming from the wall plug, to the PSU and from there shorting to the case will go right through you and your closest ones will need to get you a headstone.

So, NO, DO NOT TOUCH THE PC. Even when there's like 2 to 5 safety measures to make sure the case cannot become powered, just don't. This is electricity safety and if you don't 110% know what you're doing, you do the most safest thing even if it sounds like overdoing it. Let me put it this way: In your NA house you have 120V at behind most likely 20A fuse to power your up to 2400W PC, thou most of that isn't important, what is important is that you have 20A fuse and that is what you can get through the case of your wet PC. Your heart can go out of rhythm and you will get cardiac arrest from 0.007A running through it, 0.1A is most likely lethal, 20A and your little tiny heart will be like perfectly made baked potato, which isn't a great thing for your well-being.

Also just in case, remember the right hand rule: When dealing with possibly powered electronics, use only your right hand and have grounding bracelet on it.
You may get jolted and it will hurt like a motherF, but at least it will travel only a short distance in your body and stay far away from your heart.

Apply liberally.

I had to fix a metal camera battery charger that got soaked once. Somebody left it sitting on a snow pile, plugged in, charging their batteries. It got hot enough to melt the snow, and drank a bunch of the salt water it made. I have no idea how, but it survived after a distilled water bath and an alcohol soak.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

I have a question about corrosion, people who live near the sea suffer from sea breezes, which makes rust appear much faster than normal, I read somewhere that you could use wd40 to create a layer of protection, would that work? Wouldn't it cause other problems?

Either this isn't a fully normal PC build done by origin or they forgot to remove the tape on the M.2 thermal pad.

I live 10 min walk from a coast, but in our capital and it's an eastcoast (we mostly have western wind, and the big sea is some 100 km to the west) but it not an issue I've ever heard of or encountered. It's not like our households get saturated with wet sea air (which would not hold salt as it does not vaporize with the water).

Maybe it's different on ships or similarly exposed environments? 🤷

I think the Lenovo line up still has those on their new ThinkPads. Those things are so damn well designed. I used to call them "cat tested".

"WD-40 is a non-conductor of electricity and quickly eliminates moisture-induced short circuits. WD-40 is formulated for ultra-high surface attraction to metal. Even in the presence of moisture, it completely covers surfaces, including microscopic irregularities, and establishes a protective barrier between moisture and parent metal."

Yeah, I once found a Lenovo ideapad from 2014 that sat in rain and snow for 2 weeks and was soaking wet. After I dried it out, it came back to life.
