It could take decades to break even with GPU mining in 2023, so why would I install a new GPU mining rig in my garage NOW?  Would you believe I actually have a good reason?

I was concerned that Linus would be actually mining crypto, but that heel-turn into folding@home was sort of relieving.

I think that maybe the video should have been a couple minutes longer to better (re)introduce folding@home. And maybe seeing if that actually heated the room more.

It was relieving, but still very glanced over. Not even a link to the pinned thread in the description. No mention of F@H helping with medical research. No mention of where to get the software.

I don't have electric heat. Propane burning furnace, wood stove and a diesel stove. With my electricity rates, it's cheaper to run F@H in the side of the house that has a lot of windows and loses a lot of the house's heat in the winter than to burn the extra propane.

BC is 90%+ Hydro electric. Electric heat is expensive, but gas is available. Gas just is not reliably priced.

 

The problem tends to be that Linus has a heat pump and that room is not included for some reason (likely because it was not intended to be a heated garage for SOME reason. 

 

Just as a large FYI, MANY homes in BC have these obnoxiously large garages, because they were designed to be able to fit a one-tonne truck or a full size van or a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Basically you'll come across these homes and they will have a garage that is is sitting on it's own piece of concrete poured separately from the rest of the house.

 

(My house two decades ago, fit an entire fire truck)

 

They are usually shaped in a way that there is a small "workbench" space at the back if you don't have one of those large vehicles. If you only have one car, then you can pretty much turn half the garage into something else. It's probably deceiving how big the garage actually is, but you typically don't want to heat the entire space with a space heater, it will just rise and never heat the area. You need one of those parabolic space heaters if you're going to sit in the garage with the door open. 

 

If Linus is just going to run the GPU's maxed out to warm the space, that's not an unreasonable way to keep the space warm.

With a proper cooling setup, computers are very good at putting nearly all the power they pull into the air as heat, and they run useful stuff while doing so vs purely being a heat machine. It's a blessing in winter, a curse in summer. Regularly use F@H in winter to do something useful while heating my lounge/kitchen area. Back when I lived with my parents (and before I knew about F@H) I'd run FurMark on a Vega Frontier Edition to heat my room, as it was over the garage and the home HVAC didn't heat it as much as the rest of the house. A steady ~200-250W of heat output does a lot.

so when it got very cold in my state(i live in a house design to stay cool in summer) the 60s house.... yeah i crank up both tread ripper rigs with multi gp and mined.

so i would  break even with heating cost.

Litecoin ASIC's are how my friend heats his law offices, once a year the gas company comes by to check for meter cheating lol. I tried turning my mining back on earlier this winter but it was still cheaper to use natural gas vs the extra 200W of heat from mining.

Resistive electric heat is almost always the most expensive way to heat a space.

 

The most cost-effective improvements you can do are air sealing and insulation. Dumping more heat outside in the winter is just wasting money.

 

EDIT: Adding mineral wool batts to the ceiling of the workshop space and attaching the curtains to the walls at the edges should help keep the heat in. Building a partition wall would help even more.

 

For a space that size, if you can't run something like a pellet stove or heat pump, what you want is a radiant heater like this:

That will heat you directly instead of by heating all the air. It won't feel quite as warm as heating all the air in the room, but the heat will feel more immediate as long as you're under the light.

Yep, I ran the numbers. For my friend who lives where electric is about 1/2 the price as it is here he does heat cheaper than gas because he's breaking even on the litecoin mining and then not running the gas furnace. I'm losing money mining and not making an appreciable dent in the home heating.

So, uhh, heat rises.  So why put the box above the desk and try to force it down?

 

Build a nice box for it, with 200mm intake and exhaust fans, put that box under the desk, you have toasty toes and heat rising all around you.  You also then don't have a computer hanging off the wall with stupid fan jank and other nonsense.
