Windows 11 22H2 - Feature Update 1 for 22H2 - Out Now! (Yes, another update)

GoodBytes

Windows 11 22H2 Update has just been released. And while many are waiting for their wave to come to get this new, much needed, update, Microsoft is on fire releasing a new wave of features for the 22H2 update of Windows 11. Codename "Moment 1", however, has no official name. It is being delivered as a Cumulative Update for Windows 11 22H2.

The update has been announced, and should land on Windows 11 22H2 PCs soon, if it's not there already.

This update falls onto Microsoft new update model it is now trying, which is releasing new features as they are ready, and not have users having to wait a full year before we get it. For example, taskbar drag and drop support was one of such features that arrived in Windows 11 Insider builds and remained there for nearly a year, despite reaching a polished stage.

What's new?

File Explorer Tab Support

File Explorer now has tab support! The much-requested feature has finally arrived.

  • Tabs can be created simply by hitting the '+' button like you can in your web browser.
  • New Tabs can be opened by Middle-Clicking on a folder.
  • You can re-order tabs as expected as well by dragging and dropping them.

The only thing you can't do, from what I can personally see, is dragging a tab out or in.

Snipping Tool - Screen Recorder

Snipping Tool can now record a portion of your screen as video.
This feature will be available through the Store as an update.

This update will come at the end of October.

Photo App - iCloud Support

The new Photo app now has iCloud support.

This feature will be available through the Store as an update.

This update will come at the end of October.

Suggested Actions

Selected text, like phone number or dates will show a suggested action panel to perform a quick action.

For example, if you select a date, a menu will show a menu to create an event in Outlook in similar fashion to modern Android powered devices.

Taskbar Overflow support

Yes, that is right, since Windows 11 was released, the Taskbar never supported overflows of app being displayed. It would just show you the last app as the focused item and hide the others until you close others. Now, this update introduces that feature. An item with 3 dots "..." will show where, once click, a menu with the other apps that aren't able to show will be presented.

Open Task Manager from the Taskbar

Yes, you can now right-click on the taskbar and open the Task Manager as prior version of Windows.

Amazon App Store for Android apps - open to more people

Amazon App Store for running Android apps is now open to 31 countries, including Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Full list of countries: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/countries-and-regions-that-support-amazon-appstore-on-windows-d8dd17c7-5994-4187-9527-ddb076f9493e

Windows Terminal is now default
Windows Terminal is now the default command console window of Windows 11.

Windows Terminal is the new command terminal window of Microsoft which is open source and brings up a huge set of improvements over the old Command Prompt.

It brings:

  • Tab support
  • In window/panel split screen for multi-view pane
  • Emoji support with UTF char support allowing rich text experience
  • Customizable
  • and lots lots more.

If you have never used it, use it!

Full screen Widgets panel

The Widget panel can now expand into a full screen view with the new expanding button available at the top of the panel.

Microsoft is still working on bringing third party support for widgets as promised. Documentation has already started to appear on MS Dev doc website.

I still have to right click the start button to open task manager. Seems like this feature was not actually released or is buggy.

The update itself isn't that big. Just use Windows Update.

Yes, you can now right-click on the taskbar and open the Task Manager as prior version of Windows.

I love when they remove basic functionality that we are all used to just to reimpliment it later on. Resources well spent.

I was confused at first too cause I had 22H2 installed on Sept 27 according to Windows and I don't have any of those advertised features. Plus this was released today? Am I missing something? Was there an earlier 22H2 release?

Yeah that was even on my laptop that I upgraded to 22H2 on that date. My desktop (which I'm currently on) has 22H2 since 29 September and does not show this functionality at all.

I have it, neat to see tabs. Still odd you can't combine windows or separate, come on.

The right click on Taskbar not showing Task Manager seems to miss for most, odd really. I'm so used to using binds heh.

Those not seeing the updates, I see you have older build. You need latest number 22H2 (10.0.22621.675)

Yes, and so is right-clicking on the Start Button (or WIn+X), and picking Task Manager from the list.
