LTT is becoming an apparel company

Aidanaus

LTT is becoming a clothing/apparel company and i respect it, i just finished the creator warehouse video tour and wow - it was amazing how much it is becoming a clothing company.

I respect it, as everyone of their viewers need clothes while no one ‘needs’ tech as much as apparel.

LTT is selling merch to diversify their revenue streams.  Nothing more.

Average first post for clickbait, I give it a 6/10.

I don't think the OP is entirely wrong though. I mean I wouldn't say they are becoming an apparel company, but it is become a real part of their business.

At what point do you move from merch to just selling clothes?

Merch is about slapping your names/designs (as in logo's etc) on existing products, and use that for some extra cashflow.

LMG is designing clothes, having it manufactured. They've focused more on clothing that also doesn't scream LTT, but instead look like regular clothing. I mean I got a swacket, and no way that anyone who doesn't know that product, will know this is 'merch'.
If we also look to their ongoing development of new clothing products, they aren't just about pushing more merch, it's about making high quality products that they believe should be available on the market for an affordable price.

Also didn't they say that they could start making merch for other creators, seeing as they got their stuff going?

Oh and their Jerryrig knife on LTTStore is quite an interesting move as well.

PS the swacket and deskpad are the first merch items I've bought in the last 20+ years (basically only some merch from my back then favourite sports team), and I bought them because I really liked the products, not because I want to advertise LTT.

Yeah I agree and it's great to see, honestly. There's no way they would have made such heavy investments in their merch when literally anyone can set up a profile on teespring or sell printed mugs.

Linus Tech Threads

Creator Warehouse represented a sizeable percentage of their annual revenue in Linus's last business update video, and it has been growing year over year. It wouldn't make sense for them to not invest in that division when it brings them a net positive return.

Confirmed, Linus is a tool.

How can you call our "Trust me bro" men just a tool? He is the last tool you will need in your life without a warranty 😄

For the topic title, Linus already said that he wants to offer creator warehouse services to other creators in the long run. So to the clickbait title, LTT is not becoming a clothing company. Just Linus thinking ahead.

LTT isn't a company, it's a brand by LMG aka Linus Media Group.

Creator Warehouse is technically a seperate company (afaik), but still owned mostly by Linus and Yvonne just like Floatplane.

- LMG's product is media and they make money selling sponsor spots and overall advertising.

- Creator Warehouse's product is apparel, tools and all the other things their engineers are working on.

- Floatplane's product is their streaming site obviously.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

While I am no expert on the clothing industry or how they're actually paying for the items, it does strike me they are charging a nice premium for their branding and they know a lot of these lemmings will buy it due to it being "OMFG, LTT!!!!".

Look at the backpack thread, people paying $100 for shipping and taxes on top of the expensive backpack.  Ridiculous.  LTT knows they'll do it too.

I'd do it just like LTT as well, easy money.

People need to never forget, that while LTT can come down on Nvidia, Microsoft, etc.. they're very much for profit too.

Creator Warehouse Inc. is a seperate company registered in Abbotsford, BC. Same with Floatplane Media Inc. Which is separate, and I think unrelated to the Vancouver based Floatplane Beverage Inc.

I look at YouTuber merch like the PBS pledge drive. You're half buying a product, half donating to keep the content you consume flowing.

Shipping charges are whatever it costs to get the item from their warehouse to your doorstep, roughly. (Apparently the shipping is weighted so nearby orders help subsidize rural and overseas orders.)

Kinda feels like the only thing Linus gets excited about in videos is either new Merch, or non-hardware stuff.

Maybe there's a reason for this?

Maybe there aren't any big AMD/Intel/NVidia stories, hardware launches, or scandals happening right now?

I mean, there was Ark... As in, Ark was a thing. Was.

And this would be more relevant, if it wasn't that a bunch of their employees do work for the various channels, like for example Sarah, who does LTT, Short Circut, Mac Address etc.
On top of that, it's LTTStore.com, not CWStore.com.

On paper you can argue it's not all the same, but in reality they are all part of the same group, that includes Floatplane, I mean remember that Luke is a host for LTT, and still appears in some videos.

This is of course totally fine, and I think they do a great job running it, because instead of it feeling like separate entities, it really is 1 big group with sub groups.

There's a sucker (for merch, clothes w/e) born everyday.

Any ya'll rockin Gucci or Louis Vuitton clothing?

The question is.... Are YOU that sucker???!!!!

_________

Kidding. Obviously a business man is looking to make more money by expansion.

The tech industry is big, but it's NOT all hardware. You can get all the swag from all the venders too.

Corsair, shit you can get a T-shirt if you really want to flaunt it. But only people that are tech savvy may know what they are looking at. 🙂

Considering a good portion of their videos are an advertisement for their merch...

  • For the most part, everyone on camera is wearing at least one, if not more pieces of LTT merch
    • Linus wears nothing but LTT merch
  • Shameless plug in every video

They've basically followed Bandai's approach. The actual Gundam animated series isn't there to make money on its own. It's more of an advertisement for you to buy their model kits. Why else would they be dumping entire series onto YouTube for free?

This goes for a ton of companies, think for example about Disney. Everything is done to sell loads of merchandise.

Anyway plenty of people would wear free work clothes, I know I wouldn't mind, saves me a ton of money.

Absolutely, either change/expand, or quit. While we all have a preference how things are done, the only way they keep doing that job, is if they enjoy doing it. And remember, some of them live for that company, making crazy hours.

I'm a tech enthusiast.
I've had phases where I didn't follow tech as much. (2010-2016 was kind of boring in terms of launches vs say 1990-2010). Like seriously, how was anyone supposed to get excited about the Haswell launch or Broadwell? Those were lame.

It'd be perfectly reasonable for Linus' interest to wax and wane. Like... people change and at moments the industry gets boring.

Linus still checks the box for being an overall enthusiast and likely a life-long enthusiast but... I'll be blunt, I dither around myself.
