Comcast’s new router includes Wi-Fi 6E, Zigbee, and Matter

Summary

Comcast released details regarding their new model of WiFi 6e Modem/Routers debuting sometime in 2022. With features like 6ghz WiFi and support for Home automation software such as Zigbee and Matter built in it looks like a very strong leap forward in the world of residential internet and home automation from the biggest ISP in the US. This modem/router combo is designed for their Gigabit Pro plan with speeds of up to 3gbps upload and download.

My thoughts


with the FCC’s newly ruled allowance of 6ghz WiFi for consumer use, this will allow for more bandwidth and less clutter on the 5ghz band. 6ghz does not advertise higher speeds than 5ghz but it will allow for more devices to be connected to the network at once. The majority of their national footprint has access to their 1.2gbps down plan and in more urban areas are able to utilize this super high speed Gigabit Pro plan over a hybrid fiber coax network. oh no there's no dedicated WAN port on this.

Hell no, never use an ISP provided router. They have the highest market usage so there's a lot of prying eyes that find exploits to use you as a proxy for your residential IPs.

FWIW the current gen of xFi router from Xfinity is actually pretty decent. It doesn't have much customizability, but functionality-wise it works really well.

 

I went with a separate router because I needed a mesh system with a dedicated backbone (which xFi doesn't have), and I also didn't want to invest in their mesh ecosystem (rather have something that I can take with me should I ever switch ISPs).

 

Still, for the average non-techy user, it's a really excellent system that just works out of the box.

I already have 1Gbps Fiber and I don't come close to saturating it. I have 2 PCs with 2.5G LAN ports but I can't make any use of them. I can't imagine there are many pre-built PCs that come with >1Gbps ports.

 

I guess the only way they could market this is for multiple simultaneous WiFi devices but there is no way you will ever get those speeds in real world over wifi. And even with multiple 4K video streams you wouldn't use that much bandwidth.

It isn't just about speed, but reliability and yes, multiple devices. Yeah, the speed is pretty ridiculous. I don't think Xfinity even offers better than 1Gbps for consumers. However, especially for things like setting up a mesh network, 6E has plenty of benefits.

I'm admittedly in a mostly rural area, but I too wish they would reduce prices of lower tiers rather pushing the speeds of higher tiers. My 50mbps just went up to $60/month, which doesn't make me happy.

consider how saturated the market is with routers of this kind I don't think it's needed. All I want is a good DOCSIS compatible router since the market is basically empty when it comes to those type of routers.

There is. There are 4 on the back along with power, coax port, and WPS button. If they are the same as the previous model, there are 3 1gbps port and 1 2.5 gbps port. But there is a possibility there is a 10gig port considering the throughput of 3gbps but that information is not yet available.

There are 4 WAN ports on the back. The previous model has 3 1gbps ports and 1 2.5 gbps port. There is a chance 1 of the ports on the new model is a 10 gig port considering the 3gbps advertised speed.

it looks like its aimed at enthusiasts, content creators, and businesses. I'm perfectly fine with my 600 down speed for the price. Ultimately I think its planning for the future as devices and applications become more and more data hungry. People said 10 mbps was too high not too long ago and now you can't even watch a reliable youtube video on that speed.

All I have from my ISP (Spectrum) is a modem, and only because it was free. Owning as much of your own networking gear as possible is important imo.

Just get yourself a dumb modem in bridge mode, then link that to the WAN interface of your own router (public IP). The only down-side is now you have two devices rather then one. But at least you can use any WiFi router you want (or a router and separate AP).

A bit on the expensive side for a modem, but I've had rock-solid reliability with my ARRIS SB8200 which is a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. At least in my area, it's on the officially supported list of modems on Comcast / Xfinity's website.

Oh, and about supported modems - I've been informed that the ISP will update firmware to them if needed. That's good because for one, you can't do that anyways. A bit on the expensive side for a modem, but I've had rock-solid reliability with my ARRIS SB8200 which is a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. At least in my area, it's on the officially supported list of modems on Comcast / Xfinity's website.

Oh, and about supported modems - I've been informed that the ISP will update firmware to them if needed. That's good because for one, you can't do that anyways. And secondly, it remains a quasi-managed device by your ISP. So if they do any upgrades on the back-end, at least your modem isn't going to have any bugs as a result.

I was thinking about something similar but at that point I could probably just stick to the ISP issued router and get an AP since the router they provide has 4 Ethernet ports that work well, my main issue is that the wifi sucks even for an ISP issued router. Also I never thought to check for firmware I just assumed any DOCSIS routers were compatible kind of like fiber and now having checked apparently my current ISP, Virgin Media, does not provide any support for 3rd party routers which somewhat explains the lack of existence of them in the UK. And I can't just change ISP's since every other one in the UK provides fiber with a max speed of 67mbps in my area which not only is slower then what I'd like to have but also has bad reliability.

 

So it basically looks like I have no choice but to stick to the ISP provided router. At least it works pretty well as a modem.

The article says it can handle speeds upto the Gigabit Pro plan. The Gigabit Pro plan is Fiber and they dont use gateways for that. Gigabit pro is almost impossible for anyone to get however, even if your willing to pay the construction costs.

Again Gigabit Pro is Metro Ethernet to the home, its not Coax based, its full Fiber. You have to be with in 1/3 mile of unused Fiber. It costs $500 for install, $500 for activation and $299 a month with a multi year agreement.

Comcast cant offer anything above 45 Mbps upload on its Coax. They were merely stating that a user should be able to pull down full speeds via WiFi. Even then Id take those lying bastards words with a grain of salt. Been a customer of theirs for decades, they lie cheat and steal. 

 

While the Docsis standard does support faster upload, its thru the use of mid and higher bands. Current cable networks are limited to 5 Mhz to 42 Mhz for upload. Comcast has been promising faster upload for the past decade and has failed every year to do that.

Sir, I'm actually a technician for Comcast. (posted this because I thought it was interesting, in no way am I representing or promoting buying anything or supporting this company in any way, Comcast was just the first major ISP to announce something relating to 6Ghz wifi.) anyways, while it is true Gig Pro is a very small percentage of the footprint, they actually do have the capability to increase download speed and upload speed over a HFC system. In fact, in a neighborhood where I live (Jacksonville, Florida) they are doing a trial of 1.2 down/ 1.2 up speeds by increasing the number of upload carriers in the frequency spectrum. It is a challenging task, because it means upgrading most of the current system, but upgrading systems at the street level has been ongoing for some time. Again while I do not support 99% of the customer service and business decisions in general, the technology fascinates me and I thought I should share. Docsis is not dead and will not be dead for the foreseeable future. Also, that modem is 100% a Docsis modem. it even has a coaxial port. Metro E uses fiber inputs.

Just wanted to add. According to the folks over at DSLreports.com, which is where you get info on broadband in general. The faster upload is a trail that is in ONE market and they have been testing it for a year and a half. So to claim that they will be deploying Gigabit via upload is a stretch. Comcast has promised and has FAIL to keep any promises when it comes to faster uploads. Ive been on 10 Mbps upload for a decade at least. SHIT the North East region has 5 Mbps upload on most tiers. Its fucking laughable. Then you add in the 1.2 TB data cap  and the 2 price increases a year and its just a slap in the face. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

dude those are LAN ports, they are meant for devices wired devices such as a pc or PS5, a WAN port is the port that connects you to a larger network such as an intranet or the internet.

most color consumer routers have the WAN port a different color to the LAN port to ensure the consumer doesn't connect their desktop to their WAN port and wonder why they can't access their tick tocks.

the only place you will EVER see multiple WAN ports is on enterprise modems/routers.

 

considering that you say that you are a technical consultant for Comcast, you should know the difference and the fact that you don't is shameful.
