Relevant XKCD comic:

xkcd: Standards

https://xkcd.com/927/

There have been attempts to make a standard for RGB (like 3/4 pin, 5v/12v/ (A)RGB headers), but thusfar it only meant the situation became more and more confusion.

Plus, companies like NZXT or Corsair prefer you to buy everything from them (fans, controllers, LED strips, etc.), instead maybe just one piece from them and another piece from a competitor.

On top of that, by making your standard closed, you only have to test your equipment with your own equipment, not with the hundreds of different products out there.

Proprietary interfaces are uncommon (from small time manufacturers), the standards that the majority of devices use are 12v RGB and 5v ARGB, as mentioned above they're 4 pin and 3 pin.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

They make more money with proprietary shit, and since rgb is so popular, they make a lot more.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

There  is a standard, RGB and ARGB, They are both used by various generic RGB Devices and have actually both been used by brands such as Corsair.

It is however more profitable to sell you say a fan that connects to a controller that can only be controlled by a specific piece of software, Corsair 's Commander + ICue for example. The idea is to draw you into a ecosystem where going outside of it causes headaches, a tactic many companies use in various spaces.

They kinda are. There's the standard connector which mobos (except Gigabyte) use. Then there are tons of proprietary or semi-proprietary connectors manufacturers use (semi meaning that connector might be same, but it doesn't actually work). Main reason is, like said, that forcing you to use single connector makes you stay in the ecosystem. So the "Apple-tactic". Once you invest on one system, you really don't want to pay even more to jump to another ecosystem.
