I've been doing alot of research lately into minimalism and rving. I want to retire early like linus just mentioned in his videos and living a more minimal cost effective lifestyle seems to be just what I'm looking for. But, I'm a techie. How about linus goes camping for a weekend somewhere rural (shouldn't be hard in BC) and shows us all the challenges of trying to be a techie on the road? Rent an rv, bring a laptop he enjoys gaming on, and get a decent lte wifi setup and see if it's possible to do and enjoyable. Just like a vlog video or something. He could count it as a small vacation because he seems burnt out. Maybe go to yosemite with paul from pauls hardware

1. It's free

2. it's customizable

3. lot of free useflul software that i still use even on windows after switching back

4. i can write a simple script that automatically updates everything on my system by typing the word update

5. It doesn't ask me to reboot after an update and when i do there is no annoying screen telling me that tells me to wait

6. it's probably more secure.

7. personal data is probably safer. 

can't really think of anything more than that. windows is fine for mot of my usage.

HTC Vive Cosmos

I have been researching VR headsets, and I'm curious about the opinion of the Cosmos (and the wireless add-on accessory) after the recent price cut. I like the idea of outside tracking vs satellite. The refresh rate isn't as high as the much more expensive Index, but it edges out the Rift S. Just from outside observation, I would rank the Rift S (in terms of video cards) the 2060 of VR, the Index 2080ti, and somewhere in the middle (2070/super) territory with the Cosmos.

My name is Alexey. I was a big PC fan for more than 27 years, but then switched to iMac because it was easier for me for work purpose and I was on iMac for last 6 years, and I love it, so easy ... no drivers, no problems ... really nice!

 

But ... 

 

As a gamer, I was constantly thinking to get back to PC and decided to build a gaming setup this year. But as you realise it's tough to get back to PC after such a long period as it's tough to pick the best parts for the build and even harder to build it! There are sure various different videos about how to build a computer, but they are far from being detailed and they are focused on different budgets. I have searched the whole web and can't find a detailed guide. I did see a few from you, but they are not focused on specific builds and price ranges. So I wanted to shares this idea from the perspective of a PC noob.

 

Let's take my situation as an example. I have a budget that I want to spend, but I have no skill to assemble the PC, and I will lose a nice portion of my time by finding what the best parts in my budget are. I will surely use your forum and spreadsheets, and I will find them. But then, I won't be able to assemble them correctly and install everything the right way.

 

Imagine how amazing this would be if you create a new category of your videos. Where you share BEST BUILDS in different PRICE RANGES and show from the 1st-person point of view step by step, long video how to set up it with no skipping steps, full 1 hour or so video. This way, people who are looking for a gaming PC can just go purchase everything by your referral links ( I would even pay around 29.99$ ) to get access to this video. And build my PC.

 

I will explain why it's good for everyone. I will be happy as it's saving me a lot of time for searching the parts, I can learn faster how to assemble it, I'm saving money from buying a pre-build computer from websites like Cyber Power PC and other similar, I'm getting a better machine for the same amount of money and getting best advice from people with high skills like you. Even if I need to pay for this video 29.99$ or so, it will save me so much more in time and parts so I wouldn't mind to support you. And for you, it's also a constant source of income. You can even create a separate website where post and sell these ONE BUILD targeted tutorials, categorise them by the budget range and post constant updates according to the new releases. And any of us noobs can go there, look at the photos and previews of the builds and buy the one we want to build. It's a win for everyone. Because now I have only two options .... buy a pre-build and lose money. Or sacrifice a lot of time to learn how to build and pick parts ... but with your help, I could give a nice part of my 2000$ budget to you if you had a similar project without losing any of my money.

The issue with this concept is that every time a new product cycle starts, that video is immediately rendered functionally dead content.
For every release that AMD, Nvidia, Intel, and many others have, recommendations will change. Every time the price of these items change, recommendations may change. in addition to that, availability of certain items may be restricted, or impossible, in certain regions of the world.

The best thing you can do is start a topic for recommendations on this (and/or other) forum (new builds and planning section), with a budget, use case (workstation, gaming, both, ETC), region of the world close to the time that you would like to start making purchases.

When it comes to building a computer, for the most part, every build is similar enough, that doing it once, is close enough to doing it again a second time. Build guides such as LTT's First Person build will get you through the significant majority of what you need to know.

Hey there, welcome to the forum.

 

Since information changes all the time, a series such as this one should constantly get a new installment to keep up with the current pricing and parts availability.

If you want a series such as this one, Paul's Hardware does a monthly build, but he usually only picks one or two price ranges, so that won't always be a good pick for you. Making a thread on this forum might be easier if you are looking for specific recommendations for you, right now.

A dedicated series on how to choose parts for your PC might be cool to see from Linus though.

 

Linus has done quite a few build guides in the past, the most recent one being the POV build, which shows a LOT of information. They always include Amazon referall links in these videos, so they get a nice kickback from people buying that sort of stuff. With no extra cost to the user of this link.

Sure, I understand. But parts are not changing that often, and I'm sure it's not a big deal to add into a build a little update. Something like...

 

April 2020 Update: Use Intel Core i9-9900K at the place of Intel Core i7-9700K. 

 

I mean not always new parts give a significant impact, they won't need updating it that often. And if this project will be a good part of income, I'm sure they can find someone taking care of this project updating the videos or even making a new one. I don't see anything like this on the web now, and I like the content they are creating. I think they should take this space in the content creation.

Except it is a big deal to go back and edit old videos to try and keep up with the ever changing tech landscape.

Hardware releases aren't on a unified schedule though, and from a production perspective, hardware releases actually happen fairly rapidly.
AMD releases products independently from Intel, Intel releases products independent of Nvidia, and within those launches, it's not uncommon for their to be additional releases that follow those (Ti and SUPER edition cards, for example). Making a build guide video isn't as simple as "record video upload profit" there's a significant time investment involved in it.
