Summary

Apple, listening to user? What??!

  • I loved my old Macbook with magsafe. Apple's bringing this back! But... how does it work if all the ports are USB Type C? Will Apple just include one of those nifty magnetic quick-disconnect adapters?
  • No more touch bar! I'm so happy with this decision, because I still use the function keys (like F3 in Minecraft).
  • More ports... seems to hint that maybe there will be other types of ports than just USB Type C. I could wish for HDMI and a Micro SD Card slot. What are your wishes here?

I don’t know. Should they bring back the old MagSafe, not in the original format but something similar would be appreciated. Other than that I have no input, I mean an SD Card slot would be nice I guess

Rumors are rumors, either way, I can't buy an Apple Silicon Mac for compatibility reasons.

  To be expected.


2. In terms of casing design, the new models cancel the curvy design of existing models’ top and bottom parts and adopt a flat-edged form factor design similar to the ‌iPhone 12‌.

 

  Likely easily leaked within the right circles due to third party shell and container designs.


3. The ‌MagSafe‌ charging connector design is restored.

 

  After 7 years with Magsafe and 5 charges and one replaced charging port. No thanks, magnetic electronic flat plate coupling is terrible. I don't want it back. Having the same charging cable for a tablet, phone and computer is superior and USB C cable are dirt cheap.


4. The OLED touch bar is removed, and the physical function buttons are restored.

 

  Doubt.


5. There is no Intel CPU option for the new models.

 

  Why would they? They overheat, cost too much and keep x86 alive. 


6. They are equipped with more types of I/O, and most users may not need to purchase additional dongles.

 

  Better be, I can't imagine professionals been cool with just 2 thunderbolt ports and I imagine it's impacted macbook pro sales and being a significant sore point in reviews.

Removing the touch bar would be unfortunate... It’s extremely useful for creative workflows and changing settings like volume and brightness.

 

I think a lot of the hate for it stems from people not realizing that you can touch and slide for adjustments instead of tapping the screen over and over.

16 inch models have 4 ports. 13 does too unless you go for the lower tier version.

Most of the hate stems from when the touch bar would freeze randomly before they had a dedicated esc key so you were SOL. It's borderline useful/gimmick but if it was to shave off $200 from the price I would get rid of it instantly

I've never had an issue at all with Magsafe with the connectors, connector port, or charge cables and have in fact saved me a couple times from accidentally ripping my MacBook off a table.

Yeah I didn’t have a model with it early on to see the growing pains. The one I have now hasn’t frozen though in the last year.

 

I just wouldn’t be super happy losing all of the useful Adobe shortcuts. Going back to a million obscure keyboard combinations and making macros would be extremely annoying.

 

Even stuff like calculator functions being right above the number row and spell check without right clicking were really useful on a daily basis.

My assumption:

- it will be optional (USB-C will be an option)

- the connector could be designed with minimal wear on the device side

- it might just be a USB-C to magsafe cable

- Microsoft did it actually pretty well with their Surface line-up. It's not perfect, but it works (tested it through 2 1/2 years of daily use with their dock).

Removing the touch bar would make it way cheaper. Apple just brought back the physical ESC key. The touch bar really didn't had the success Apple originally intended. It will not be a wide missed feature.

Calculator buttons have been a thing for decades now lol but I agree with the content creation aspect. I love using it to scrub my timeline and also remap my function keys to things I will use. But with all that said I wouldn't miss it at all lol

No I think instread the power cable's USB-C male connector that ships with the device will be just a little bit smaller so it does not physically hold in the device, then they will add some magnets in the socket and some magnets on the plastic bulge that merges the connector and the cable and that will be `mag-safe`, eg if you pull on the cable hard enough it will pop out. The downside is you will be unable to use this cable on any other device as it will just fall out very easily without the magnets in place to hold it in.

miniLED displays are cooler than the current backlight LCD. By using miniLED you distribute the LEDs across the entire back side of the display rather than on the edges this means the thermal output is spread out so you need less thickness but also you don't need a defuser so miniLED displays are in fact thinner than regular LCD displays.  making the display boxy will however mean there is enough space for a better camera unit!

Not sure a small OLED strip (epically one that is not used for video/image viewing) will save that much money, apple can buy rather cheap OLED `offcuts` for the Touch Bar as they are not considered colour accurate displays. Might save apple 5$ (possibly the keys cost more as they result in more complex cutting of the case and that is time using a CNC machine etc).

Yer i think what apple might be doing instead is getting the same type of haptic engine they use it the trackpad to work in the Touch Bar, then since the Touch Bar is pressure sensitive they can make it so you can `feel` the controlls without accidentally triggering them the trackpad does a very good job of `faking` a click.

That's literally the reason. Also Apple Silicon can't run Windows natively. That makes any Apple Silicon Mac out of the question for me.

That says more about the "quality" of Apple's own chargers and not the connector itself...

It's saying the MagSafe Charging is restored, implying return to the Magnet Cu to Cu connection.

 

I might be alright with a wireless charger, however can they dump enough wattage wirelessly to charge a laptop battery properly? Having two Cu surfaces just touching to make contact isn't reliable, you need them pinched and sliding against each other to scrap the oxide/char off that builds over time.

 

I'm frequently having to clean and 'buff' my Macbooks port, it got so bad and the pins suppressed so much I had to replace it. Replacing the charger costs £79 ... if I don't replace it after a few years it gets red hot and feels like it's going to definitely a fire hazard.

Well, to counter your experience, my 13 year old mbp (on right now) has magsafe...the brick died ..i dunno.. 7 years ago? (it was out of warranty at least, so no idea really).. apple store just swapped it for a new one gratis....otherwise, no issues.

What if the new “MagPort” (I’m calling it this way to avoid confusion) is the same in both the portless iPhone 13 and the new MBPs?

What if it also carries USB 2.0 data? (enough for maintenance on the iPhone, for a DAC on headphones and for webcam/kb/mouse on the MBP)

What if this is also the reason why the new MBPs are getting flat sides?

What if this “MagPort” (flat and IP68, kinda like the smart connector on iPads) becomes the new standard port in the Apple ecosystem for everything from iPhones to AppleTV remotes to game controllers to Macbooks to keyboards and trackpads etc.?

 

So this would be the content of apple product boxes:

- the product

- a usb-c to MagPort cable
