It's currently impossible (and may never be) in terms of whats in the movies, but that said both franchises have sci-fi in them that will likely never become a reality.

What they did was basically an isolated flamethrower with incredible speed and max temperatures.

An actual lightsaber is firstly impossible since light doesn't stop (so it wouldn't be a tube) and it would take pretty much a nuclear power plant to generate it.

Since when do episodes 7 (The Force Awakens), 8 (The Last Jedi), and 9 (The Rise of Skywalker) not exist?
We all know they weren't amazing, but they weren't downright crap.

Ok, here's how badly my computer didn't want me to prove you wrong:

My mouse died, then all USB ports died that were not active (keyboard safe for now) forcing my mouse not to work, windows task bar refused to work with the mouse after 5 minutes of charge, task manager refused to work for both keyboard and mouse then my keyboard started going wonky and when I unplugged it it refused to work forcing a reboot which took 10 minutes... Then my computer refused to connect to the internet...

 

So here I am now, going against my computers wishes:

Which is also why protosabers exist in the franchise as well, so basically what they made was a Protosaber since we do not have the tech (and may never have) to put it into a compact tiny wavy stick thingy that when you hit the on switch it grows and glows.

I've never heard of these, can't remember George Lucas making any of these.

It is likely the most reliable source on the web or at least easiest, since that Robot Chicken is very accurate towards finding anything that isn't obvious in the star wars franchise.

 

I have found forum posts dating back 2006 (I think) and people still claimed plasma.
