An AMD "Zen 3" Ryzen 9 5950X running on a Hackintosh overclocked to 6.0GHz has been spotted in Geekbench

Two entries of the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X have been spotted on the Geekbench database. One of these entries shows the AMD processor was running on an iMac Pro and it was clocked at 6.0GHz, which is quite the impressive figure. The Geekbench database entry identifies this system an as "Acidantheria Mac," which originates from a former Hackintosh outfit called OpenCore Computer.

The gist of it is someone who already owns an OpenCore Computer system probably got their hands on a Ryzen 5 5950X engineering sample and upgraded their rig. But it bears repeating, that is predicated on this being a legitimate database entry, which we don't know that it is. We definitely think it is an engineering sample, based in part on the second section we highlighted above (which clearly identifies it as such). This could also explain the soft multi-score it posted. The two entries spotted on Geekbench (1, 2) by @TUMAPISAK were confirmed by the same to be of an engineering sample of the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X by crossing the OPN code on Geekbench with the OPN code shown in the official product page. The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X core clock speed reached a peak of 6023MHz, as seen on the gb5 files shared by @TUMAPISAK - the .gb5 file containing raw JSON output from readings taken while the test was running. It indicates the chip hit 6.02GHz during the test. We're calling hogwash on this, it is technically possible that whoever is behind this benchmark run used some exotic cooling and heavy overclocking, but we strongly suspect Geekbench is just reading it wrong. The processor appears to be overclocked to 6 GHz, as pointed out in the gb5 files of the benchmark listings, which show the frequency between 5931 MHz and 6023 MHz during the test. 

 

The Hackintosh with the Ryzen 9 5950X posts a single-core of 2,022, which is around 19% higher than the Ryzen 9 3900X. In line with AMD's claimed 19% IPC performance uplift over Zen 2. However, the multi-core of 17,877 is around 12.9 percent higher. The performance scaling is not quite the same. The entries show a single score of 2022/2024, and a multi-core score of 17877/17448. Compared to the Geekbench entry of an overclocked Ryzen 9 3900X, clocked at 5.88GHz also running on an iMacPro, there’s a ≈20% uplift in single-core performance. For comparison, @harukaze5719 compiled a nice bar-graph that compares the 6 GHz overclocked 5950X "Zen 3" to a 5.88 GHz overclocked 3950X "Zen 2," and other processors in its class, like the Core i9-10900K, a stock Ryzen 9 3950X, Core i9-10910, and a Core i7-1165G7; with the Ryzen 9 5950X leading the pack.

There seems to be a mixed bag of opinions on this entry. Whether it is legitimate, and simply an extreme overclocking result / entry with exotic cooling; or not legit and perhaps an error entirely. Either way, it is interesting stuff as it means at the very least there is a possibility of better overclocking results on Air/Water with Zen 3 and the upcoming 5000-series. Something important to note, is that apparently the current LN2 record for a 3900X is 5.65GHz, therefore surpassing that by 300-400MHz is still quite an impressive feat (even if on exotic cooling).

Fairly sure Hackintosh has difficulties with AMD chips. It's likely just a misread.

 

Reminds me of the time that Task Manager would misread my 2700K. Task Manager used to think that CPU was operating at 5.8GHz~. Completely unobtainable on ambient water of course.

 

Geekbench has it's own difficulties. At least it's not Userbenchmark.

I'm not sure why people are all crazy over clock speeds. The benchmarks are more telling regardless of what speed it is running at.

Reminds me of the time that Task Manager would misread my 2700K. Task Manager used to think that CPU was operating at 5.8GHz~. Completely unobtainable on ambient water of course.

 

Geekbench has it's own difficulties. At least it's not Userbenchmark.

Hackintosh USED to have problems with AMD.  It has been a while now since all the Ryzen stuff has been fairly well "supported" for it.

There have also been geekbench fake result uploads prior to Apple launches in the past and similar, so this could just be something along those lines.

 

All in all, interesting as a possible LN2 overclock speed consideration, but nothing to put any stake or real validity into at this time.
