Dr. Disrespect Returns

15 minutes ago, mr moose said:

You and spotty have now both said he is focusing on an alpha male character.  If what he does on screen is his impersonation of an alpha male then he doesn't know what one is.

Alpha male STEREOTYPES. Dr Disrespect represents alpha male STEREOTYPES.

STEREOTYPES

ˈster.i.ə.taɪp

Definition: a set idea that people have about what someone or something is like, especially an idea that is wrong:

Dr Disrespect plays a character with alpha male

stereotypes.

I'll try in simpler terms.  If  I dressed up in leotards and ballet flats, then told everyone I was dressed as a stereotypical mechanic,  would you not claim I didn't understand what a stereotypical mechanic is?  That is what he has done,  he is dressed up and acting like  flipped out 80's porn star,  but thinks that is presenting the stereotype of an alpha male.   B.A barakus is an alpha male stereotype,  RAMBO and Arnie are stereotypical alpha males,  the pool cleaner from foxy joes crazy weekend is not an alpha male stereotype.

Edit: The picture I posted earlier is a stereotype of an alpha male.

I'm going to hazard a guess that @mr moose has never watched a Dr Disrespect stream.

I think the 80s wrestler description of his persona someone mentioned before is pretty spot on, which is also the assessment of his character on his wikipedia page.

Quote

Streaming persona

Beahm is regarded as an entertainer in the streaming industry, rather than a "professional gamer." ESPN describes him as "a WWE character in the competitive gaming world", and he has himself said "I created a character who plays multiplayer video games, and he's considered the most dominating gaming specimen."[21]

When playing as the Dr Disrespect character, Beahm wears a black mullet wig, sunglasses, a red or black long-sleeved athletic moisture-wicking shirt, and a red or black tactical vest. One of his most notable catchphrases is "I'm on top of the mountain, and I'm only halfway up!", and his motto is "Violence. Speed. Momentum". He sports a mustache he has named "Slick Daddy" aka "The Poisonous Ethiopian Caterpillar".[22]

It may not show with his tactical vest and mullet wig, but the guy is actually pretty jacked. He's also quite tall (6'7"). Though his persona is through his behaviour, not his appearance. Mr Moose seems to be focusing solely on what he looks like and came to the conclusion that he couldn't be a caricature of an alpha male stereotype based solely on his retro appearance. Next Mr Moose would be arguing that Hulk Hogan isn't a macho alpha male type because of the way he looks.

I have watched both him (which is how I know I don't like most of his content and 80's wrestling.  I consider neither to represent an alpha male stereo type.   The 80's wrestler was never meant to represent meant to represent male hierarchies, it was supposed to be entertainment  based on testosterone (now debatable with latest research) fueled violence.  It was supposed to be somewhere between a comedy and a piss take but gained traction as a clayton's sport.

Not too sure why you would think that,  Hulk Hogans character has always been jacked up, His career started not as an actor but as a legit wrestler.

The problem here is that there seems to be an issue with the concept of a stereotype being an actors presentation and a stereotype as it exists in society.  DR disrespects persona is not a stereotype that permeates society to any large degree.

I'm still confused about why people are arguing about something that doesn't even actually exist.   The origin of the idea of an alpha was some guy went out in the woods to observe wolves.   He thought he was observing a pack, but was observing a family.   He goes back, and realizes the "alpha" was just a father wolf.   So, what you guys are actually arguing about are dads, not alphas.   Even if you wanted to bring in the chimp argument, humans are too complex emotionally and socially for such a thing to even work that way amongst us.

Several psychologists have re visited the concept,  many of them have a different take on what it means.  but for the most part it just defines the top of a hierarchy.  How they get there is much more debated (and interesting).

Edit: I Should add though,  it is definitely a social construct and thus carries as much weigh from a cultural/social perspective as applying stereotypes do.

Just now, valdyrgramr said:

From what I saw it just keeps going back to "confidence".   But, the problem is humans don't stay to a single group as Adam Conover pointed out.  You can be both an alpha and a beta depending on location, but having confidence =/= being an alpha.   It's just a hierarchy thing that a guy thought existed.

Trying to resolve when a single person has personality traits that put them in both camps sometimes just means that at home they are one type but at work they are another.  If all the alpha males congregate together one of them has to be more alpha male than another or the concept falls in on itself.  Hence why I think you noticed that narcissists normally sit at the top all the time.

And not far from locking either. This thread went from "tech news" to arguing between "alpha males" and "stereotypes" in few short hours. Stay on topic, please.

I'm not attacking the character he plays as if it was him, I am saying the character he plays does not resemble an alpha male as he seams to think it does.  He's saying "I'm an alpha male" but he's portraying an insecure beta.

I think the concept is kinda whooshing over your head in dramatic fashion.

It’s an act, him proclaiming his male superiority is is just part of the satire... You realize what he’s doing is satire, right?

I’m more interested in why Twitch dropped Dr. Disrespect. The fact that he’s going to be streaming on YouTube likely eliminates any criminal wrongdoing theories.

My guess is that after Mixer went belly up, Twitch decided to clean house of Dr. Disrespect and invoked something in his contract to break the contract. The pause in his streaming was likely the two parties’ legal teams arguing about if Dr. Disrespect was owed anything for Twitch’s termination of contract.

It's his only character, he's not a thespian.

In this case I would say that underneath the character is pretty much the same and the character is an outlet.

I wonder if he comes back with some more crazy conspiracy theories and how long till he's banned from YouTube too.

I know it's an act, I've said that several times already.  It seems no one bothers to read anything anymore.

EDIT: it seems you couldn;t have read the last few posts that explains it all because they were hidden, and we have been asked not to talk about it:
