Hi guys,

I’m in school and i need to make a engine either small combustion or a saltwater engine. I need it to at least power a quad to around 60kmh to show my class. Is it possible and cheap? Anyone have any designs I haven’t payed attention in the classes.

Many thanks,

Goodbye

It's not cheap to make an engine,  in fact I have trouble accepting that students would be expected to make an engine.   What sort of school project has you needing to make an engine?

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Are you sure you understood that correctly? Building engines is not easy, especially with the power output necessary to fulfill the requirements you stated. If I had to accelerate a quad to that speed, I would probably drop it off of a cliff or somehting /s

I'm almost certain that because you haven't payed any attention in class, you misunderstood the assignment.

To truly design and build a functional combustion engine from scratch is a very large task that would take significant amounts of tooling and equipment to pull off.

An engine is extremely hard to fabricate yourself, and you're asking for one that's actually good.

Sure you could work up something that runs but accelerating a quad up to 60kph is a whole other level.

A quad being not a very aerodynamic vehicle with off-road tyres will need an engine that produces quite a large amount of power (I'd say at least 15hp or 10kw) to achieve such speeds. Making an engine with such an output while at the same time making it so that it still fits on the quad is an almost impossible task for an individual.

Even if you managed to do it, it wouldn't be cheap; you're going to need lots of parts and most likely expensive tools to build the thing.

Are you sure you've read the assignment properly?

I'm thinking maybe it's just design, and even then, not a fully fledged engine. It is probably just an example scenario

Please tag me @RTX 3090 so I can see your reply

You haven't paid attention in class and you expect that one post on this forum from one of us will be equivalent to an entire semester of lectures? Pick another field, honestly. You'll find nothing but suffering in engineering if this is your approach.

Anything is possible if you know what you're doing, but for that you'd need to put some effort in. Cheap? Hell no.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

A company like Toyota will spend hundreds of millions of dollars and tens of thousands of hours designing, prototyping, and tooling to produce a new engine design; You are not going to get it done by asking some people on the internet after you slept in class.
