Blackmagic Design announces 12K 60 super 35 cinema camera. it also does 8k and 4k 110 no crop. all recording options are only in blackmagic raw

 

IT IS only 10K

My thoughts

I really want a cube version of the pocket 4k and 6k from them but instead they give us this insane camera. I can't wait to see more test footage and reviews.

I know this gets asked every time resolution increases, but I genuinely wonder when or even if we'll ever hit a ceiling where more resolution isn't useful or desired; where people just won't care any more. It makes me wonder of a future where people look at resolution of video cameras the same way people look at processors for smart phones; where the increase doesn't translate into effective or noticeable usefulness.

Aren't we basically there? I haven't been able to see both, but i doubt there will be a noticeable difference between 8k and 12k unless its on a GIANT screen where the pixel density is too low on 8k. Same thing with high refresh rates. There is a barely noticeable difference (if any) between very high refresh rates like 240 and 300.

I believe the SSD used in the recorder is a SAMSUNG 983 DCT 1tb for 230$ and 2tb for 500$

This same thing was said just recently when Canon officially announced the 8K/30 on the R5, and even continues to be said about it today.  "Who needs 8K?!"  "Who needs 12K?!"  Seriously: when is more resolution ever a bad thing?  The only realistic answer is: when you run out of storage for it.  But assuming unlimited storage, why not keep pushing the resolution?  It allows for lots of flexibility.  Depending on your final output resolution, having 12K allows you:

• lots more room to pan/re-frame without re-positioning the camera
• to zoom in on a section of the image without losing a lot of detail
• to rescale it down to your final output resolution while retaining the entire frame

That last bullet is a big one because the scaled output from 12K to, say, 4K will look quite a bit better than something shot with 4K native.

 

I say: keep the resolution wars going!

really though 5 would be enough to replace the 3 C200 and the 2 reds. they also got a few pocket cinema cameras. Maybe 1 C200 will stay for its good auto focus so linus can shoot stuff solo

It’s a Blackmagic camera, it won’t be replacing anything without thorough testing.

Probably when a 100 inch TV has a DPI of 550

some of their older ones were a little rough sure but the ursa pro 4.6, pocket 4k,6k are all great cameras.

Correction, they ordered 5.

There's a difference between the production and consumption sides of things, though. Higher resolutions for production provide added flexibility. I'd say that on the consumption end, the market has had a hard time even adopting 4k, particularly when it comes to streaming.

yep your pick. its a lot better than canon who makes you go service a cine camera for a lens mount swap. (most some canons do allow you to change it but it isn't quick)
