Your Folding Rig(s)

Just started yesterday. It's says I get about 45kPPD.

i54670K @ 4.4ghz

R9 290 @1ghz

I plan to run this almost 24/7 (sleep and work). How long do you guys think my rig will last?

How long it lasts depends on the quality of the fans on your gpu, how hot you let it run and how meticulous you are with cleaning. The most common cause of GPU death I've seen is overheating due to burned out fans. If there is adequate ventilation and you dust frequently, temperatures will obviously be lower and the fans won't work as hard, prolonging their life span. Does the R9 290 have a non-reference cooler?

Yeah it's a Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC. Runs fairly hot maxing at 80°C at auto fan speeds. Ambient temps of my room ranges from 29°C-33°C so that may be a cause for the high temps. What I want to know is how long will the fans last if I set them at 60%.

Provided that the heat doesn't increase from having the fan speed locked lower than normal, I'd start keeping a close eye on the fans from the 18-month mark onward and I wouldn't be surprised if you had to replace a fan before 2 years. Components with moving parts like fans don't cope well with prolonged exposure to heat. If you have a relatively dry basement I'd suggest moving it down there. Just by moving my folding rig out of my small bedroom the gpu temps dropped by 10 degrees.

  • 1 month later...

Only folding with my desktop right now, started close to a week ago and I'm almost to 21 WU's. :)

i7 4770k + GTx 770 - About 60k PPD (Seems kind of low?)

I haven't messed around with configuring anything but I'm usually running "Medium" unless I'm using my desktop for something other than browsing forums or Reddit. :)

Possibly looking into building a dedicated folding rig in the future. Cancer is pretty common on my dad's side of the family though so I like the idea of supporting anything that can help.

Desktop - CPU Core i7 4770k - MOBO ASUS Maximus VI Hero - GPU Nvidia GTX770 - RAM 16Gb Corsair Dominator GT - PSU Corsair TX750V2 - Storage OCZ Vertex III 120Gb - Case Fractal Design Arc Midi R2

Basically you simulate cellular interactions on a molecular level in order to better understand diseases.

and in a more general sense, slightly modified from the boinc stickie.

it's a distributed computing project.

it gives you the opportunity to lend your unused processing

power to do calculations in the name of science and progress!

This can be to help medical science, physics, mathematics, better understand nature, aswell as various other things. But in the case of folding it's strictly for medical science. it gives scientists the chance to gather big amounts of data by giving them access to hundreds or thousands of computers, all of this is achieved by running some software on your computer.

I have a 6870 which I'm giving to my brother to fold with, my room gets way too hot at night with my 270 in the same system.

At Christmas I'm planning to buy a 7970 or two depending on how cheap I can get them :)

Specs: CPU: AMD FX 6300 Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A DS3P RAM: HyperX Fury 16GB 1866MHz GPU: MSI R9 270 OC edition Case: Sharkoon VS3-S SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB HDD: 1TB Caviar Blue PSU: Corsair CX500W

*If I say something that seems offensive, please don't take it seriously, it was most likely meant as a joke/sarcastically*

Essentially all modern laptops bypass the battery when plugged in and fully charged. Unless your running on battery alone it's not going to cause excess wear.

Not really... most laptops handle this well, esp if using the Chrome App - yes, folding while ON battery will drain it fast. :)

Even with the power supply on your battery will die more faster then normal use! A laptop is been builded to be portable not stick in the wall and let it be in the power all day long. your battery has to charge and de-charge Look @ the 20/80% charge percent it will last 5 years, if you have the battery all day long on the power supply the battery would not even last 2 years it cannot function properly. i did not said it will drain fast i said F@H will destroy the battery! faster draining is faster charging so the life-cycle of that  battery will end sooner then expected.
