When I let it idle I'm getting about 115k. But I only let it idle when I am sleeping or at work. Most of the time I am getting around 60k. In actuality I am getting around 40k a day.

sig rig folding on light (sometimes full), though bf4 is hurting my PPD (and being kicked out in a few months, bit up in the air, oh and paying £2/$3 a day just to keep my tv and pc running).
b55 gets 2000ppd, gtx285 gets 8000ppd

e5200@3.33ghz with an xfx 9600gt (740core/1000mem) used by missus folding when idle (teach her for leaving it on) gets about 800ppd. (give or take)

Hi guys.

Im not sure if this is the right topic to post this question in but i think so.

I am going to start folding from home on two computers. One is an old workstation (very very old...) and the other is a gaming PC that is more recent but was never the best specced out (brought on a very tight budget).

If possible i would like to have these running most the day and most the night.

Would you recommend upgrading extremely cheap low standard, high draw, loud power supplies with more recent ones?

Budget is not really a problem, would rather not spend £150+ on anything though.

Thanks for your help.

Folding is going to have your components running at full load, drawing full power. While not mandatory - you will want a stable PSU to ensure things run smoothly and don't crash. One of the hardest things to trouble shoot is random crashes due to PSU failing. Don't need to spend a huge amount. Depending on your gear, a solid 600 watt PSU may be more then enough. Just get a reputable brand name unit and that will do. Clean stable power can make all the difference in a rig... especially when folding.

Okay man thanks a lot for your help. I'll look into one. To be honest i think with one of the systems 600 watts is going to be overkill. Is there any way to test system draw relatively easily? I would use a website to get a rough idea of the voltages. however its an old system that was brought from a shop, the process name has been scratched off to the point where its unrecognisable due to some people not being aware how to remove dried thermal paste.

Anyway, as i said, thanks for your help.

To figure out the processor info, simply download and run CPU-Z. There are sites for sorting out power usage - but whatever they say, add a bit. The most effective solution is a device called a kill o watt, which you plug into the wall then plug your PSU into - gives a reading of current usage. Handy. :)

You can buy 400 and 500 watt PSU's but you are limiting yourself. A high quality PSU can last you years and many upgrades. A 450 for example is handicapped though, as it only has say a 4pin EPS connector, whereas many new boards require a 8pin. I might only have a single 6pin PCIE connector whereas many new cards need a single 8pin, or two 6's, etc.

My advice, spend a bit extra and get at least a quality 650+ unit. Won't go wrong. Even better, get a modular unit, that way you only need the cables required and can put the rest away. Less clutter, better airflow. Just don't lose the extras. :)

Alright man thanks a lot for your help :) I'll have a look for a decent PSU. I was considering getting the ax 1200i from corsair for an upcoming build, have to save for about the rest of my life for it but ill be getting the PSU first for a couple of reasons anyway so i can bang that in my folding rig, buy a wireless card (yep the computer is so old the onboard ethernet broke and its not especially viable for me to run a cable to it) and i'll be folding :) thanks a lot for your help man!

Just started folding a few days ago, Slick mentioned on the livestream and I'd been meaning too since the forum started but just couldn't bring myself to leaving the PC on full process for so long.

I really just wanted to contribute to the team, I won't be up anywhere in the top 10 or even 100 but I figured it all helps towards the total and why not help you guys who have given me so much already.

Started about 5 days ago and up to 87K and 16 WU. Avg 50PPD which in actual with me turning it off and on is around 11K PPD, sorry I can't do better, I don't pay the power bill at the moment and I'm thinking of others.

Wow - extreme. :) My bigger 4P unit only runs an AX850. Trust me, unless you usage some insane hardware a 750 should be great whereas a 850 would be overkill. A 1200... would really be a waste of money for two reason. First, you really do need some ridiculous hardware to even come close to requiring that monster. But the other point, PSU's now have those ratings, bronze, gold, etc, so the closer you get to 80% usage, the more efficient they get, i.e., better power usage. So, a 750 for you may be a lot better as it will also run more efficiently in your rig then a 1200 ever could...  Just some food for though. :)

My future folding rig (a little project that isn't worth doing but screw it, it's fun), I'm going to utilise a pair of Intel Xeon 5130's or maybe 5160's if I can find another at a decent price, just need to find the Socket 771 motherboard and the rest of system.

Not sure what kind of PPD that will return but there is only one way to find out :)

5130 is an old dual core - so with a pair, you have 4 cores - but here is the trick. You need a somewhat expensive board and ECC ram. Mucho expensive. PPD wise... I think my 3570k will destroy them. :) I have a 4 core Xeon system at work running right now, similar age - gets about 10k PPD. But, I didn't have to pay for it, so that is the only reason I have it. :)

If you don't already have the parts, I wouldn't spend money on it - for "fun" and $200-$300 on ebay you can get an AMD 4P system (bunch have been linked in various threads) where they may also not get you bigadv, but will probably generate a lot more PPD then those older Xeons...

at that price, i'd go with a cheap gaming rig
