AMD 4th gen might not support PCIe 4.0

Source Tom Hardware

Rumors around the 4th gen seeinh a downgrade, I hope this isn't true.

EDIT* to those who don't know a lot like me, or skim the Source and not read the discussion. This is for the APU boards, not the FULL Desktop processors...My bad!

That would be kind of absurd. It seems like this is only true for B550 motherboards, aka the budget boards. The x570 aka the expensive boards already have it and will keep it.

Zen 4 should be PCIe 5.0 compliant, 4.0 ends with 3rd gen iirc

Uh... What? 5.0 doesn't exist yet. 4.0 is the new one, 3.0 is the old one

I wasn't aware that 5.0 existed. My bad.

But also that article says that it will be in data centers for the most part and that consumer grade gear will stick with 4.0 for the time being.

And PCIe 4 was finalized for almost 3 years before it was put into a platform. So. Saying it's finalized doesn't mean it's anywhere near consumer inclusion.

It's already been included in AM5 which is Zen 4 and which comes out 2021

This is for the APU's - it's possible that they don't use the IO die which is what enables PCIe 4.0 on Matisse to my knowledge. Regular Ryzen 4000 desktop CPU's will almost 100% have PCIe 4.0.

Haha. So this guy calls me out for "not thinking before typing" when he's making bs claims. Cool.

No it hasn't, unless you can provide concrete proof from AMD that it's being included with X670. Chances are it'll come with X770, sure, but not the initial launch of AM5.

I mean it's possible, sure, but highly improbable.

Well, I can't reveal my sources but there's a 80% chance X670 is PCIe 5.0 compliant. The only question is whether Zen 4 will have PCIe 5.0 or if Zen 4+ will be needed

Ok. So, not guaranteed, and not by any stretch of the imagination verifiable. Solid.

  1. That's incredibly unlikely.
  2. Even if it's true, it wouldn't be a big deal.  I'm guessing we're 5-10 years away from 4.0 even being necessary.

I know I am being completely pedantic but, it was put into use with Power 9 used it first back in 2017. That, as you said, did not bring it anywhere near consumer frame of mind though.

First line in the article...

Quote

The possibility of PCIe 4.0 support on the upcoming AMD Ryzen 4000-series (codename Renoir) desktop APUs isn't looking too good.

This is for Renoir. "Ryzen 4000" APUs based on Zen 2 architecture.

A bit confusing but this is talking about 4th gen APUs, not Ryzen 4000 based on Zen 3 due to be launched later this year. Should clarify in the title :)

idk why you just jump on someone for not knowing something and i have doubts it will be implemented anytime soon considering how long it took for pcie 4.0 and theres just no need for it in consumer boards as pcie 2.0 even for the most part is enough for 90% of people

He stated something without taking 2 seconds to just Google it rather than make some outlandish remark. I was merely pointing out his mistake, nothing more. I am far from perfect and would like to be corrected if I stated something similar.

Ignorance breeds ignorance.
