Hello.

First, I'd like to start by saying that this has never happened to me. Therefore, this thread is not me whining about someone locking my thread. This hasn't happened.

But I've seen threads locked with the aforementioned comment "Please use status updates". But if you do, nobody reads your profile, nobody will see it, nobody will react to it. I think you wrongly assume that people will not take interest in the matter you discuss and abruptly end the conversation before it's given a chance to start, which I think is unfair. I've seen a handful of threads I was interested in, expecting to read interesting discussions around the topic...only to be immediately greeted by "Please use status updates" and a locked thread.

I do think you guys are being too strict about forum rules and the range of topics that can be discussed.

In many cases it's just random stuff that leads to no discussion. I know that might seem harsh but a topic that is just you posting a random picture or some meme or something isn't worthy of a discussion which is the whole point of the boards to begin with.

Some people do, yes. I get that LTT is a technology-focused channel, and that these forums are aimed to be technology-focused too, but the truth is: some people also simply enjoy to discuss various, sometimes vain subjects with a community they've grown to love.

If anything, a new forum subsection dedicated to off-topic/silly discussions would be totally harmless and could let the community bond even more.

I rarely see anyone reacting, much less commenting, on topics (even before they are locked as status update material).

A whole new category dedicated to shitposting? People already misuse half the forum for that. That would be a horrible idea.

the majority of topics that get locked are not discussion topics, they're "look at this cool thing I found" or "I'm gonna go on an angry rant."

off topic is always a welcome place to host discussions about non tech stuff. Again, it has to be a discussion for it to remain open. Things that are locked as status update material are not open ended, and they're not really discussions.

I do think you guys are being too strict about forum rules and the range of topics that can be discussed.

Generally speaking we will lock posts for topics that are just statements, daily thoughts or that aernt written in a way that promotes a discussion.

Example for posts outside of Off Topic:

"Man I just bought this new GPU block. Looks super cool! Cant wait to put it on my GPU :) "

"Hey guys, just bought this new GPU block. Any tips I should be aware of? Im reading the manual and there are some things I dont understand."

Example of posts in Off Topic:

"I love pizza, my favorite is pineapple and baccon. I hate anchovies".

"What's your favorite topping on a pizza? Mine's Pineapple and bacon, but I hate anchovies. Does anyone have topping combo recommendations?"

A simple formatting adjustment can turn a status update into a worthy topic. Essentially, if you're not asking a question or gathering an opinion, it's likely status update material.

1.) If no on reads your profile, you need to be like Achilles - so people remember your name

2.) Status updates are populated on the bottom right of the website.  Personally I check those every time I am on the forum, as do a great many others.

3.) If you are just fishing for likes - this isn't facebook

4.) If the status gets locked, why don't you go to that persons wall (or send a DM) to continue the discussion?  You can tag the same people that had been involved before.

I had a status update that went on for like...3 months....200+ replies with like 5-10 people following at intermittent times - if people are interested they will follow.  My topic was Ryzen first gen, and checking 3 diff dual channel kits and timings.  People were interested so they followed, asked questions, made benchmark requests etc.

Pretty much every topic I lock as Status Update material is something I would rather see on Facebook, Reddit or some other post-and-run site. Good forum topic is one to ask something or some thought/well written post that promotes discussion. Many of recent locks are because poster found typo and decided to make topic about that.

Or me not putting my 2 cents on a news topic.

I have plenty of people react with my status updates. It just depends on what is going on. As stated above, I have had a couple really take off. Just depends on how interested people are.

Salty? Your thread was moved because it didn't match guidelines. The subforum has this right there on top:

Quote

Failure to follow the guidelines can result in your post being removed and possible warning points being assigned.

This is off topic for this thread, but TN has always been problematic for moderation, and currently there are more and more people who just post-and-run. Some maybe hoping to be featured on WAN, others probably just thinking this is FB or Reddit. Or some other place where nobody actually cares.

Oh no no no. Not at all. I just realized how that came across. XD Sorry about that.  I should think more before I make a post. :/ It is something I am working on.

In all seriousness though. I need to stop doing that. I keep posting like I would on OCN. Guess that is what happens when you have been a member there for a decade and leave. I didn't realize that was being an issue here on LTT but it makes sense.
Either way I digress. Sorry for steering this thread off topic.

Some subject aren't appropriate for some of the crowd we have here (some members are VERY young, as the rule mentions, REMEMBER THAT), also, as mentioned, this is a tech-centric forum, there's PLENTY of other places online that are WAY more appropriate for those subjects.
