More clearer than ever - LG OLED screens reach 40% transparency

Previously seen at CES as well as LTT, LG's transparent TVs is soon to be leaving prototyping. Shown above to be used to shown for the upcoming Korean Elections.

LG Display said Monday that its transparent organic light-emitting diode screen will debut through MBC broadcasting station’s general election ballot counting show slated for Wednesday. A transparent OLED is a next generation see-through screen that allows viewers to look beyond the panel even with the power turned on. LG Display and LG Electronics had commercialized the transparent OLEDs last year, but this is the first time the product will be revealed to the public through a TV show with high viewership. The company said that the transparent OLED panel suggests an expanded use for the technology, such as for shop windows and office spaces, while at the same time offering a differentiated viewing experience. LG Display’s transparent OLEDs are 55-inch in size with full high-definition resolution and transparency rate of 40 percent. Thoughts: It's good to see that this is finally coming to into proper use cases, but I don't think most consumers would have a use for it standalone.

Yeah, i can see these types of panels being popular for advertising purposes in shopping malls and stuff but i honestly can't think of a place where i would want one in my home.

I mean, you can have 2 rooms separated by a "window" that's actually a TV. People in both rooms can then watch the same content on one TV. 

 

Maybe not that practical for home, but could work for bars, public places,...

With the catch that one of the two would see the image flipped. Also are you sure the image can be seen on both sides?

Limited use in reality.

 

While OLED 'burn-in' is an over emphasized problem for the average consumer market, it is more prevalent in the advertisement industry , of which , ironically, is where transparent display would be of use.

Yes, which is not an issue unless you need subtitles.

In that case, Virtual idols are normally projected rather than displayed. Maybe this would be a cheaper alternative but Korea's Virtual Idol business isn't as popular as other countries like Japan, China and Indonesia.

Hmm, lots of movies show writing that matters to the story. I also wouldn't like for everything in the movie to be flipped, maybe that's just me though.

 

Also unless you can make the room perfectly dark you'd see the face of people on the other side as well as the room they're in instead of black, which isn't a great experience.

Doesn't work, you can't focus 2cm in front of your eyes, that's why all smart glasses need complex optics.

Just a thing about the whole "two people watching the same tv from two rooms", I immediately thought of not two people watching from two rooms but just having one TV for two rooms. As in I can watch the TV when I am in living room and I can watch it in my bedroom, since I have those two next to each other. Though I am thinking about this more like the single person I am so don't mind me  (and of course this all would only work if they actually transmitted the picture both ways and if they actually weren't incredibly costly, as in it would most likely be still (way?) cheaper to just buy two separate OLED TVs for both rooms).

They make smart mirrors way thinner.

40% transparency is a pretty good mark,  though color distortion is probably a bigger deal if it exists. These thresholds are critical to getting under display cameras afterall.

I think it can be useful.

Replace windows with it. Now you can have your windows show useful info such as temperature outside.

 

Have it in front of your bathroom mirror so that it can show info while you for example brush your teeth. Have it show reminders, or advice on how to improve hygiene/health. Have it connect to your smart toilet and display things like if you need to change your diet ("Good morning LAwLz. Your iron levels have been dropping. I recommend you eat some food that's rich in iron or take supplements").

 

Have it as a screens in your car. Maybe not a good idea to use it for the driver in our current cars, but could be useful for the windows in the backseat or passenger seat. Or at the driver seat when self-driving cars are advanced enough.

 

But in all the scenarios I gave above it would be used for limited amount of info, not as a TV. Think things like notifications or simple info. If you want more privacy you could always have two of them and then have the "back" one display something making it opaque when sensitive info is displayed on the "front" screen. That way you can only see it from one side.

 

 

Think of it as glass/windows that can display info, rather than a TV you can see through.

 

 

 

... And yes I know it would be extremely expensive or possibly have other drawbacks. I am just thinking of ways it could be cool and useful, if we solved the other issues.

Not really.

 

The Oneplus 5 I bought a month ago was just used by the seller's mom to watch YouTube and it has pretty serious burn-in from the comment section and the Android nav buttons on the bottom of the screen.

 

 

Although yes it is much worse for things like airports or whatever, it is still a problem on the consumer market.

For some reason I thought "What would a SUPER futuristic expensive microwave or toaster look like?"
... Yeah I can picture this as a possible future when this tech gets really cheap. Make it connect to the internet to play an ad while it microwaves your hotpockets.

I mean people apparently buy smart refrigerators. and there exists a toaster with a touchscreen already. So transparent OLED touch screen Smart Microwave? Honestly doesn't seem too far fetched of idea someone will try to make.
