LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

So my remote PC has heat slabs instead of actual heat sinks (you know, that MB trend to "look cool" by putting black metal chunks on the VRMs instead of heat dissipating shapes) and in a Yo Dawg moment decided to pilfer a VRM heatsink from one board and just straight up stick it on top of the slab. It now cools better...wasn't really expecting that.

Pretty much.

And no one has much interest on deving something like OpenMM for apple because 1. they overhead, 2. apple probably would get pissy, 3. macOS just isn't prevalent enough to make it worth it generally speaking

Have to disagree!

CPU folding and BOINC and also GPU BOINC works perfectly on my Mac.

So why would they get pissy?

Overheating? YES... I put some Liquid Metal on my Throttlebook Pro and its better now... but it could do more with better cooling

FOLDING MONTH 2021! GOGOGO and save on some heating costs 🙂

There is no support for OpenMM on macOS, that is the library used for molecular simulations by folding and many other applications

This saddens me. I normally run my rig in OSX (hackintosh) and only switch to Windows for gaming. I wonder if Linux supports it.

In the OpenMM wiki it says it's supported in OSX through OpenCL. Is it just a matter of installing OpenMM or is it a fundamental issue with the Folding@home software?

From my experience with apple, which tbf is not something that I have dealt with for a long time, they don't like people using their stuff for alternative things. At least they didn't for the longest time, looking at louis rossmann they seem to still have that kinda mentality to some degree or another. But, maybe I'm wrong. Apple is not my area of expertise I will confess to that. I don't inherently have an issue with apple though outside of the fact they seem to be overpriced in many situations. But then again when everyone else starts pricing like apple they aren't really overpriced, at the end of the day it's the market that determines the value of something. I'm just cheap I think.

Best to ask @Metallus97 here but I know there is no GPU support in macOS due to limited OpenCL/MM support. Other than that I don't know much deeper as macOS is not of interest to me.

Is it cooling issue or power limiting issue? My Mid2015 MacBook Pro (i7-4870HQ + R9 M370X) is stuck at 800MHz when both CPU and GPU are folding at the same time. The CPU, however, never gets above 80C, but if I pause the GPU folding, it will get into the high 90C.

What tab were you searching in?  If I select Team or Team Monthly using my Name and 223518 I get "No result" and I entered passkey when I set this up.

OpenCL versions got deprecated on OS X without picking up the newer versions, similar to OpenGL.

OpenGL has some tools for swapping games to metal available, but I haven't seen anything similar for OpenCL (though I also haven't looked).

Linux works fine once you figure out the graphics card drivers and dependencies.

My Mid 2012 MBP (i7-3615QM, GT650M) will spike the CPU temps to 70+ in normal use under OS X, and that's with new NTH1 or Kryonaut (can't remember which I used).  Before the reapply of the TIM it was 90+.

I haven't tried anything with windows because IMO it's not worth it on that old hardware when I have my desktops.  Though since I replaced the DVD drive with a 1TB HDD, maybe I could spare the space now.

R5 3600, 5700 XT, AX370 K7...  and that's plenty for me.  If you ignore the masses of other parts I occasionally put together and laugh about.

My mid 2015 gets into the mid 60s with full throttle folding and gaming use simultaneously.  I got it to the low 70's once last summer on a hot day while doing that and also charging it.  Normally it sits in the low to mid 50s.  Under Windows, add 20 degrees, but with less performance.

I mean, it's a 22nm, nearly 10 year old 45W CPU.  Also the fan profile Apple setup on the laptops favors volume over cooling, running the edge of thermal throttling.  Actually before I redid the paste, it did throttle if I hit it with continuous load.  I also tweaked the fan profile a touch to get them spun up a little more a little faster.  It's still nearly inaudible but it keeps it out of the red.

I actually put it's little brother, a 2760QM in an old Latitude E5520 that wasn't designed to handle anything over a dual core...  If I run it 100% too long it will thermal out and shutdown lol.

R5 3600, 5700 XT, AX370 K7...  and that's plenty for me.  If you ignore the masses of other parts I occasionally put together and laugh about.
