How does ltt do so much video work

The Torrent

Just watching the new petabyte project is full video and I see they used up a petabyte and I see all those people working there.

i mean no offence Linus but the video quality isn’t really high I don’t understand how you can go through so much data and so much workforce power I know there’s channels like techlinked but seriously the amount your going through how? How can each video me taking up any more than 10gb forget the tens of thousands of gigabytes of data per video you must be using how?

Raw video devours egregious quantities of data, especially 8K Redcode RAW. They also probably delete very little, holding onto footage even if it never gets used in a final product.

So why do they record as such high resolutions with whatever redcode raw is when it only ends up 1080p

You can take something shot at 8K and do a lot more in post than you can by shooting in 4K and then being stuck at that resolution with other post effects you may wish to employ.

They also record videos you don't see on Youtube.. ads for companies and stuff...

Videos like the mentioned one are lower production value ... but there's videos like the ones below that are shot on RED (i guess) or other high end cameras and you can see the higher quality.

As for the second video it may be shot in regular 1080p or 4K but it's still nearly 40 minutes after editing... they probably shot 4-5 hours of footage before editing so it's still a lot of disk space :

they film in raw 8k, which takes up a huge amount of space. they keep their entire backlog of videos stored locally. and they do work not on youtube. they do training videos and TV stuff all the time, you just dont see it cuz they dont post that stuff to youtube.

im surprised it took as long as it did to fill up petabyte project

That would be Youtube, and actually reason why they record and edit in 8K to begin with. Youtube makes everything look worse. If they would be serving full 4K videos files (or 1080p from FP), you would understand that YT is the main culprit in "quality". Its been noted that FP HD is very similar to YT 4K.

I just don't get why they have to save every second of footage, even of videos that were not that great, and in raw 8k footage.

Because if they didn't, every time they had to download footage from YT then reupload it to YT it would be compression hellscape.

Really what it comes down to is Linus is paying for the massive amounts of bulk storage because he can be assured whenever they need to pull footage, it will be of the quality it was shot in. This makes the editors lives much easier, as they can spend less time cleaning up a compressed mess to be somewhat presentable, and it also makes their jobs faster having the source footage. Thats more time to spend editing, creating better content, and making LMG a little richer. Never believe everything you read on the internet, but supposedly LMG is worth ~15 million. Time is money and all that.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

Well, they're a media production company, and you're not - it's not meant as an insult, but they seem to know what they are doing.

Plus it means they have all that footage to go back and re-use for whatever they want.

Linus himself isn't rolling in cold hard cash. Net worth is a very misleading number.

Linus Media Group, the company, is likely worth at least a few million - and Linus owns the company, so therefore that's his net worth too. But that net worth is only worth a damn if someone chose to buy the company from him.

I'm sure he's living comfortably at home - I'm sure they have decent savings, etc. But I'm also sure he's not "cash rich".

Also, whether his employees are "broke asf" (source, please?), is not really his fault or concern. He pays them well - well above minimum wage. They're not raking in millions either, but they are making good skilled worker wages.

They film using 8K RED cameras, so I imagine the video size is quiiiite big. A FHD 2 hour movie is ~5 gigs and that's only 1080p.

Because you end up with the original Apollo 11 tapes being erased. Not saying that LTT videos are as significant as the moon landing, but you never know what will become important in 50 years. Not sure if its Linus or someone else at LMG but someone must have archivist tendencies which I can easily relate to. Besides it's a good excuse to play with cool server hardware.

Your videos are offered in higher resolutions, if you upload high resolution content in the first place.

Upload 4K videos, Youtube may offer 1440p content.
