Why does everyone hate XMP?

I always see people complaining about how bad XMP is and that it's not the best for overclocking ram. 

Can someone tell me why people feel this way generally? Is it because you can't squeeze out the max performance of the ram with XMP? 

I see it as a super convenient way of overclocking your memory for n00bs.

 

Any insight would be nice, thanks!

Personally, I don't classify using XMP as "overclocking"; I mean, you're just simply enabling settings that the manufacturer of the RAM-sticks has already designed it for and tested that it works. I see overclocking specifically as pushing for out-of-spec settings.

I don't hate it, hate is a strong word reserved only for the worst offenders, like Win10.

I don't even dislike XMP, what I do find, is it causes more issues than it solves, so when people have RAM issues, I suggest turning XMP off before trying anything else, and in my limited experience, find doing so solves the issue.

xmp doesnt work for most people. like when ryzen first came out the ram could be xmp rated for 4000mhz or even 3700 or 3200mhz and wouldnt work cause the cpu memory controller cant handle it so xmp failed and you end up overclocking manually anyway

if I remember with XMP you're just running the Ram at the manufacturer's rated speed and without its the lowest speed. I think with DDR3 you would be running at only 1366mhz without XMP

I have some kind of luck I guess. I never have problem with XMP on any computer, Ryzen included. But of course, if someone has problems, disabling it can help (it's like downclocking ram).

Started with 8GB of 2400Mhz DDR3 from a 2x4GB Kit

Now having 4 Populated slots,.. 2x4GB, 2x8GB, 24GB in Dualchannel CL11 is where I'm at. (With 4790k at 4.7Ghz)

 

 

 

Set XMP and it did everything... both times.

It just worked.

Because I use D.O.H.C.P and hate intel so I inherently hate XMP!

 

I don't hate intel, I just cant afford their price to performance ratio in my own mind (this generation for sure)

It is meant to make everything easy and quick but sometimes doesn't work. I have yet to get XMP to work. Manually entering the timings and voltages can yield better performance at lower voltages

If you hate XMP, you hate DOHCP.

 

It's just profiling specific settings into a /config.

Sometimes manual timings can be better,.. but I've not got the time to bother finetuning that with repeated BSOD (if happening)

XMP is amazing...1 click overclocking, but with settings that make sense for the kit you buy...whats not to like about it?

XMP increases voltage and speed but also increases latency so you end up with the same performance except the placebo in the numbers makes you believe your RAM is actually faster while it isn't.

 

Common sense says that if you don't know how to properly overclock then don't do it.

That is a weird statement  

Common sense tells you, in a situation where everything matches specs and hardware requirements that xmp can grant you a more fluid data distribution, only practical results can tell you what the words fluid data distribution actually means

I think people may not like it due to wanting RAM to "just work".

 

You shouldn't have to tweak something in a bios to get RAM to run at a specified speed that it's stated to run at, is the only thing I can think of as a negative.

I've always used XMP and never had any issues since 2012 (Long live the 2700K).

 

I only dislike it because my friends keep forgetting to enable it in BIOS and when they bring their PC over...3200MHz RAM? Nah, 2133 MHz speed. lol

Not really. People who don't know anything about hardware, buy computers assembled and configured by specialists. So - if you want your computer works good, configure it good or ask someone who configure it for yourself. It's not "buy everything and put together by yourself" type of hardware (even if it's common on this forum, but we're not majority). You may do that (configure your own pc) if you know what are you doing, but most people call specialists for that (or buy prebuilt computers).

I'm not talking about hit some OC specs, like an 8700K at 5GHz.  I'm talking that the RAM says on the box 3200MHz, so when you put it in, it should run at 3200Mhz, no?

 

When you put in your CPU, do you have to tweak your BIOS to make it hit boost clocks or base clocks?

No, most of people do NOT put anything in their computers, they buy ready-to-go hardware. No matter if you want OC your ram or just plug and use - you're "computer freak" / power user. And if you made it by yourself - you should know how to configure it.

The last time I tried to use XMP, my computer refused to boot when the RAM speed was applied to what it was rated for and ASUS's convenient tool to find the fastest RAM speed stopped short of the rated speed. So instead, I disabled it and found I could set the RAM speed directly. And the computer booted just fine. Go figure.

 

That's not to say XMP is useless, but I'm looking at it more like if I can't just set the RAM speed directly, then I go see about using it.

It's great if it works, but I've never had any luck. Manually entering timings and voltage only takes a couple minutes. Then you get curious and lower the timings and end up with better performance than with XMP anyways.
