[urgent] How to convince your parents to get faster internet?

yaya1
Go to solution Solved by yaya1,

Sooo...

Having come home from school yesterday, I sat down at our kitchen table and had late lunch. Sitting there, I said: "Hey, dad. Errr, can you maybe make a call and after that, I'll get like, €10 of pocket money less each month?" I then proceeded to again explain to him that I meant the support hotline and how I'd pay for the extra in cost and had him agree with what I wanted to do.(I still don't really know I got him to agree, lol)

When I was finished and he was going to bed for a nap, I was like, "Please remember to make the call...?".

In the evening, I remembered him after he'd come back home after shopping for groceries, which seemed to annoy him and I got a little mad when he said "Ugh, do I really have to do it today?", which I replied to with "Er, yeah, kinda, 'cause otherwise we're gonna forget about it" and he said something along the lines of "Nah, I don't think it's gotta be today, whatever; even if we *did* forget about it, wouldn't be a big deal, right?"...

I went into my room and later that evening, my mum came into my room telling me my dad had just called them and switched to a different plan(although I really don't know if it's the "right one":/?), so yeah, mission accomplished I guess! :D

Thank you all so much for your help! :) This really *is* a big deal for me, as I've been wanting to get better internet for at least 3 and a half years! :D

Are you sure? Why would a company refuse to upgrade your contract and don´t earn more money?

is your internet data capped?

I convinced my dad to upgrade because I used too much data and it was cheaper to upgrade

If your parents use devices that need internet: You could download stuff 24/7 and block the internet for other people.

I don't think it's possible, although I'm not sure...

As far as I know, it's not capped, which doesn't really help here I guess... :/

I already thought about the third one too, although I could just switch off/slow down the WiFi entirely, as I'm the only family member who knows how to do that, although I guess I'd risk my dad getting really pissed off at me about that...?

I would try to emphasize how important a faster internet connection for you is and how much happier it would make you for a small favor of only 10 Euro. If he is a good father wouldn´t he make his children happy?

You could also argue that your family is stuck for the next 3 years and can forget streaming if they change their mind.

Try to convince your sister and mother first and then berate your father.

Who is the owner of the internet connection? If it's your mother just convince her.

I would have my PC on all day as the internet is so slow i have to leave wait for it to finish downloading something, and the cost of the electricity bill is gonna cost more than the extra internet speed.
And have a torrent client open taking all bandwith so everyone blames that the internet is too slow

I already tried the first one, but he didn't seem to think it was true.

I have to say, though, the second one sounds tempting...??

I know, technically, it would be lying, but I already thought about starting a download and then entering a game which's FPS I'd have capped to like, 25, just so he'd realise it's unplayable... :/

Just lie. It's the best way to get quicker internet. Try not to get caught though :P

My dad is like your dad. He doesn't understand the difference between slow and fast internet, but I still managed to convince him.

Do as I did and pay for it yourself, it's what I had to do...

I was with Sky Broadband *shudders*...

Paid for a good ol' Virgin Media 110 download and half arsed upload.

But point still stands.

Exactly the same sort of situation here. Had enough of Sky's horrendous internet and had to bribe friends and family members to remark how slow the internet was.

I got 2Mbps on a good day with Sky's atrocious excuse for internet.

Got Virgin Media 110 down and it's a million times better than Sky ever was.

Just download any movie / games (over 80gb) let your parents painfully watch how long it takes.

or stream some of their favorite tv shows, let them suffer

I'm assuming his dad doesn't ever do or need any of that which is why he plain doesn't give a flying duck.

My parents bought 56k connection back in the day because we didn't even have internet at all and because it was paid per impulses it often cost a lot. So they said we should find something better. I found ADSL (1024/256 kbps at the time) and actually organized it all on my name, paid for the actual physical connection they had to connect with new copper line and mandatory ISDN (what a rip off that was) and was also paying it monthly (30€/m). Then I switched ISP and now have 100/10 mbit and I'm also paying IPTV plan for my parents as well as sharing internet with them. Not paying any rent so this is what I'm paying and never even mentioned any price to them. Then again I'm earning my own money since age of 15 so it was feasible.

If you have no income I really have no idea how you could possibly convince your stubborn dad other than telling him that such speed was usable 10 years ago and that you need to upgrade to make it even usable. Also, often new plans offer more for same money or less. I used to have 20/10 FTTH and they offered free upgrade to 100/10 without any extra payment. 2 years later (now) they offered all new plans that have larger IPTV scheme for same money I was paying before and they also add 25% discount for 1 year if I tie my contract for 2 years. Since I had plans on staying with this ISP, of course I took it. So, now I'm paying 25% less for 1 year and have more TV channels. When discount runs out, I'll be paying same as before but with more TV channels. So, check what plans they have and how much you're paying now for this. It's likely they now offer something faster for same money.

well, i would ask them to go out for dinner, and on the car i would complain the snailnet speed, and why you need broadband, or even fiber to home to game, watch videos and homeworks. even your phone's cellular data is faster than that yarn cable dial up.

why everybody post the spec of their rig here? i dont! cuz its made of mashed potatoes!

your parents are the ones who pay for it, you are lucky that you are getting it for free...

if you really want faster internet get a job and help pay for the upgrade.

my parents were always hard-asses teaching me the value of money each chance they got, even when i was 3 i had to do some simple chores to get money for a game that i wanted.

in fact i was in the exact same position that you are in now, but if your parents are anything like mine, they aren't going to budge at all.

you can list the benefits all you want but in the end if the parents say no, it ain't happening...

simple as that.

I convinced my parents to get me a better network by finding a deal that's cheaper than my current one and also faster at the same time. Went from 50Mbps to 100Mbps and saved ~5€/month in the process. Here you can also get a prepaid SIM with unlimited 100Mbps 4G at 20€/month so that would be an option too. Just stick it into some old Android phone and use it as a hotspot.

My stuff:

Headset : Beyerdynamics DT990 Pro 250Ω w/ AT2020USB+

Monitor : Acer XF240H @  144Hz

Unplug it and plug it in a few times throughout the day so that it will turn off for a few minutes, especially if your parents are watching something or playing online games, just make sure you don’t get caught

then they will be like “oh, we should replace the router” but do it with that one too, then they will be like “we should get a better plan, maybe that will help” and then stop when they do that.. boom..

We are supposed to have 16mb download and 8mb upload and I get about those same speeds but it can be spread over more than 3 devices. You may want to get a new router if yours is over 3 or 4 years old as there are new standards for wifi and yours might be getting "tired". I tried to get my dad to upgrade our wifi for the longest time but then I realized the speeds we have are fine for basically everything we do. Sure we may not be able to stream a 1080p video with 4 other people watching youtube but I can comfortably play online while my family watches a movie. Also, think of the other people that have worse wifi. My friend has internet that is 700 kb per sec and he hates it.

The only reason I'm here is that I have homework that I don't want to do

I mean, that kind of sounds like it could work, but apart from me really not wanting to do that(?), I'm the only family member with the knowledge required to access the router console, so I could just switch off the WiFi...??

Sounds like a good idea, too, but I live in Germany and mobile plans here are expensive af... :/

I've got a prepaid one that's got unlimited SMSs(is that the plural?)/minutes and 1.75GB of data(I think it should be LTE) and I pay like, €8 for that per month...

Although it's faster, it hardly makes sense to use it on a daily basis due to the price... :3
