CenturyLink Blocks Internet To Show Advertisement

CenturyLink's Ohio branch decided recently to block user's internet access in order to force them to read an advertisement and interact with that advertisement to regain browsing access. The message was essentially an ad for their parental blocking and security software. CenturyLink claims they were required to do this as part of a Utah law requiring everyone be notified of filtering for "harmful content" but upon further digging the law only said people needed to be notified by email or snail mail. CenturyLink clearly is just trying to wiggle their way out of any blame but what they did is completely inexcusable and I sincerely hope they get fined for this bullcrap but I highly doubt anything will come of it (sadly).

This is known as a "Man in the Middle" attack, by the by. It's happened before with ISPs, and it's actually something they can almost always do. Though if you're using a different DNS, it's normally unlikely your ISP will be able to hijack a browser without causing themselves problems.

Working in century link's area in Ohio, most customers I have talked with don't really need another reason to hate century link.  Hopefully this crap will die off and not be picked up by other isp's

Their isn't really a "popular" ISP in the USA, due to you can only get one real option in most areas, even major cities.

 

Its like being the most popular student in a 1 person school.

friendly reminder to everyone who reads this.

 

you can use public DNS providers to avoid the ISP's DNS servers altogether such as:
Google: https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/

CloudFlare: https://blog.cloudflare.com/announcing-1111/

OpenDNS: https://www.opendns.com/setupguide/

they are often faster anyways, and there are other options out there too if you don't like any of those for some reason.

I'd also recommend changing DNS servers on your home router that way every computer you have automatically uses those dns servers rather than having to configure each one :)

Their consumer-facing presence is in DSL, but I believe they handle a huge amount of business internet services. 

 

Edit: answered my own question. They acquired Level 3 not that long ago. That explains a lot, haha.

They can't get fined for failing to provide the notice, if they sent it in the most obnoxious way.
While we can interpret "in a conspicuous manner" in various ways, there's nothing as conspicuous as outright blocking your network access until you see it.

As much as I loathe CenturyLink (I switched to Comcast who are shockingly less evil), but I have to blame the idiots of the Utah government for going full blown religious sensationalist trying to censor the internet of porn.

 

It's like when a customer calls in wanting to block everything on their kids expensive new iPhone and I'm just thinking why TF did you give your kid a smartphone if you are trying to gimp it to be a basic phone with a nice screen.

What I still don't understand about this is how a law in Utah is causing them to do this there when in Washington we never experienced that as far as we noticed. 

 

Also it totally figures Utah would come up with some crazy, "make sure they know they can keep the porn blocked" BS.

The law says they could be fined $10k.  Is that $10k per instance?  That could get expensive fast.
