LTT Official Folding Month 2018!!!

Go to solution Solved by palespartan,

I figured I would take advantage of the fact this post hasn't been locked yet to spread the word about this years folding month.

Folding month 2019!!

See the thread for detail and don't forget to spread the word!!!

@leadeater you can now lock this one.

Going to run Linux on this one later. Which distro works best w/ FAH? My preferred distro is Manjaro, but I had issues getting it to work.

Is that the HAF-X Evo? Nice

Lots of howtos on running Ubuntu. I've been a SuSE user for years but there's also issues running F@H on SuSE so I gave Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) a try. Not too much of a learning curve. I used the Desktop variant for my first system and the Long-Term Stability (LTS) server variant for my more recent version.

Biggest challenge is getting the headless mode to work without the use of a HDMI EDID dongle so the o/c commands can be run.

I'm doing a detailed Linux Build Log for this system once I finish the Windows versus Linux Performance testing.

Had so much fun during the F@H month I told myself I'd get a full-time machine set up with old hardware I had (so I could actually use my gaming rig for, well, gaming again...).

Well, got it up and running today!  I also decided to give Linux a go so it's running on Ubuntu.  It was surprisingly easy to get everything running.  The only hiccup I had was figuring out that OpenCL didn't install with the Nvidia Linux drivers.  Oh, and that the GPUs.txt file didn't install with the client/control, so had to get that so it would actually detect my GPU.

Once those were solved it was off to the races!

It aint pretty, but it works.  i7 2700k and GTX 1070 in an old Antec 900 case; should be good for a solid 650k PPD.

Ohh, I didn't get the memo. ?

Finally got the new motherboard in after shipping delays. Folding on Windows 10 for a few days then I'll install Linux as the primary OS with Windows 10 as the secondary boot.

Had to borrow a 4GB DDR4 2133 stick from another system. I was going to buy another memory kit but even Windows 10 seems to run folding OK with single channel memory and there was no noticeable drop in performance on the Linux system it was borrowed from.

As long as you’re not hardcore into CPU Folding single channel should be sufficient :)

FOLDING MONTH 2021! GOGOGO and save on some heating costs 🙂

Arrrrrrgh - Ubuntu install from Hell. 12 hours later and I'm finally folding on the new system. Had issues 1st using the iGFX for the initial install then getting X Windows to work on the NVidia card. Then after I finally got it built had my trusty 22" NEC Spectraview monitor's DVI input die. Then after installing for the 4th time the packages got corrupted and folding would run for about twenty minutes then fail with a bizarre error and hang the system.

5th time appears to be the charm and its been folding a WU for almost an hour so I _THINK_ it might be stable now.

HFM is collecting data and it's being monitored by Zabbix so I'll have a nice comparison in a couple of days.

Then I get to tear it apart and rebuild with the RTX Drivers in the Define R4 but at least when the Define C goes on sale I wont have to reinstall again.

Yes, I’m almost as much of a fan boy of the higher end Fractal cases as I am of Noctua fans.

I just wish Fractal had left the power supply shroud out of the Define S2 otherwise it would be a perfect case for a 2 slot folding rig. Voluminous chassis with a straight airflow paths and support for 3 x 140mm front and 1 x 140mm bottom intake fans and 3 x 140mm top and 1 x 140mm rear exhaust fans with sound dampening.

I like the clean estherics and lack of windowed models as I’d rather have another panel coated in sound absorbing material than plexi or tempered glass.

I want to try out the C with the front panel removed and the dust filter in-place and see if I can get the same airflow with reduced front fan speeds for even lower noise. And I’m contemplating removing the power supply shroud to see the impact to temperatures and hence the performance of the GPUs

I believe it's just held on by rivets. It also has ventilation cutout throughout the shroud minus the front plate

Gamers nexus has shown examples of it making a difference (H200 where it's literally right against the PSU shroud) and cases that it made no difference (H700i review where it was far away) I think they had an instance where even far away, the ventilation mattered but i cant recall which review that was

I examined the case in detail last week at a local Bricks and Mortar store I try to give as much business as possible to.

The shroud is held on by approximately 15 rivets that should be able to be drilled out and removed. The three at the rear of the chassis will have to be reinstalled as they also hold the expansion card bracket.

The shroud is perforated but only above the PSU so that can be installed upside down and suck air from the chassis if desired. The perforations only extend slightly past a 160mm power supply.

Further complicating matters the base of the chassis has bends, likely to add structural reinforcement, between the base sections for the power supply and drive cage/fan mount location. These bends restrict mounting the fan closer to the end of the power supply but it should be OK.

My plan is to run the new board in the Define 4 with both cards for a month or two until I can get a C on sale then move the system over to the C (with new fans which I'm ordering) then test with and without the shroud to see the difference.

From my experience with the Define S adding the bottom fan to direct cool air into the lower card resulted in a 5C drop in the lower card and the upper as well as it is getting cooler hot air exhausted from the lower. Though the PSU does obstruct the rear GPU fan over the GPU it still has 1 1/2 to 2 slots of a gap to breathe.

PSU Shrouds reduce the breathing room for the lower card but they also impact front intake fan placement.

The other change between the Define S and S2 is the removal of the 120/140 side panel fan mount. This was removed on the R series between the 4 and 5 versions. It too can have an impact on cooling performance but less of one compared to a bottom fan. As the fans on the GPUs draw air into the cards Side fans are more effective if configured as an intake but they do not have dust filters and so are providing a nice direct path for dust straight to the fins on the GPUs.

Side fans are taken for granted. Honestly if done correctly it has more of an impact than a bottom fan (like my level 10 GT that has flaps to direct the air) for both the bottom and top card.

I think that was due more to the case being a negative pressure design than anything, and that would allow air to be drawn in from everywhere, as opposed to a neutral or positive pressure where it is pushed out, so the GPU is getting fresher air, depending on the configuration

You're thinking of the H500. The H700 cones with 3 front fans and 1 rear fan

Noob question, but how do we enable the badgers badges?

We can't necessarily enable it, you would have to PM Whiskers for it to be place to your account. See below for more details:

It might take a while since they might be working on the Folding badges and other forum related stuff. And of course, real life.

So to clairfy, each individual user that did folding month would have to PM an admin for the folding month badge? I wasn't sure if that was how it would work or if an admin would go around and give everyone who qualifies the badges at once.

I believe the folding month badges will be done as a batch based on if you qualified for it. Especially since there is a list that exists with the names of the ones that qualified. For the generic folding badges like the one that you have, you have to PM Whiskers.
