How do you go about asking a company for parts?

Lots of professional builders on this forum get sponsored obviously.

I was wondering how a novice builder would go about securing some parts for a build.

Other than writing a detailed email about the build and intentions with everything laid out for them what would you do?

Is there even a chance for novice builders to be considered? Which companies have you made the best experiences with?

Probably it is the other way around,

company contacts you, and says that they want to sponsor you.

I thought when they say sponsored they just meant the parts are from that company. Otherwise you probably need rep, a good reason, and a return worth more to them then the parts

It just always sounds like people get small items like fittings and stuff for free if they advertise that they are specifically using those. Obviously you gotta have some rep to get components like a graphics card and stuff.

They don't so much "get it for free" but rather as a way to accomplish the advertising you are giving them. If you aren't an advertiser (like LMG) and can't deliver advertising that would be beneficial to the company in terms of sales or interest, then you are going to get the silent treatment from said company.

You need to have some acknowledge before even trying. You need to make them wanting to sponsor you as you are essentially advertising their products. That won't happen unless you have Youtube or other social media channel with at least decent following. Or if you are professional modder and appear in modding contests regularly.

 

So, rather than going that route of begging, be like rest of us and work/save for your parts.

Good luck...

I have over 56k subscribers on YT (YetAnotherTechChannel), and my DIY PC build videos have anywhere between 40k to 1,4 mln ('How to make a desk PC for adults') views. 97% of the companies I tried to reach out to didn't even bother to answer my email. 3% emailed me back telling me that they are not interested. The only two companies that I managed to get in touch with were the guys behind the Sentry case (and that's only because they are Polish) and AMD - but they actually reached out to me.

My first experience asking for a review sample ended up being my last.  I contacted Fractal about reviewing their Define R6.  I got an email back saying "please reply with your shipping address", which I did, and..................nothing.  Sent a follow-up email.............nothing.

 

I guess they weren't as interested as I thought, and I got the email from the VP of marketing himself (unless it was a bogus email, but it didn't seem that way).  Oh well..........no skin off my nose.

Just wanted to comment on this not sure if someone has already said this but in certain cases companies will have a overflow of product i know that a manufacturer contacted Gamers Nexus because they had too much inventory so they decided to do a sponsorship with them and Gamers nexus proceeded to donate everything to a local school. Bringing this up because you dont necessarily have to tell them what money gains they will get it could be you doing them a favor by taking extra inventory so in a sense its much like a mutualism type thing :)

@Mnpctech Hangout is a great place to start. 

 

The two things that I tell folks when they ask are:

1. What is the return for the company. for example (Can they show the rig at PAX?)  is the build log posted. 

2. Build it and they will come. Many good case mods can get to 80% more complete with out critical components then a sponsor can put a brand new Motherboard/GPU in and then use that build to promote it. If you have truly built an amazing mod they will want to put hardware in it.
