Not the best picture, but I found a couple of old processors (pentium 4 from 2001, Core 2 Q6600, and Pentium E5300) and ram (couple gbs of ddr and ddr2).

I have lots of cool stuff, e.g.:

 

- A 486-based Compaq computer w/original monitor (technically my Mom's, but I have free reign of it)

- A Pentium III-based Dell laptop (my first ever laptop as a kid, got it as a hand-me-down, lots of memories there)

- 2 early Pentium 4-based Dell workstations (one of these was mine as a kid to mess with as much as I wanted, the other was the family computer.  P4 1.4GHz, 256MB RDRAM, remember RDRAM?)

- iBook G4

- iMac G5 (currently non-functional as the GPU needs a reflow)

And some various Socket 775-based systems, though those are less "retro" and more just "old", lol.

 

But probably my coolest piece of retro tech is this (though not strictly speaking retrocomputing):
 

Got it at an estate sale, but didn't realize just how rare these are until I started researching it a couple of days later.

I think I created a post on this once but last year my dad found his first computer, the Osborne 1. It was the first commercially successful portable microcomputer, and when I say 'portable' and 'microcomputer' I mean it's nearly the size of an ATX Mid-tower. Back when my dad got this in 1982 it cost nearly $3,000cad. With inflation, this computer is $7k+ in today's money. 

 

The OS floppy disk is missing though so it won't boot up but we are keeping this relic around.

Could always crack it open and give it a look but I know the feeling. I have an old Compaq Portable that is at this point mainly a show piece.

 

I picked this up a week or so ago and been cleaning it up... Ibm pc 365 with a pentium pro 180.

 

Got it cleaned up and painted the bare metal chassis in some primer grey as there was some pretty good staining I couldn't get rid of. Won't power on from the motherboard though I have to jump the trigger on the psu but it does power on and I get post beeps at least so a few issues to sort out. Totally stoked though I've wanted a ppro for years so very excited to finally add one to the collection

Yeah something I have considered, my dad is hesitant even though he knows I would not wreck it. He never has any sentiment to anything, but this and his old record collection are two things he genuinely seems to care for. It was his first computer he bought himself and subsequently is what got him into computers, so I understand.

 

When I suggested tearing it apart so I could build a sleeper PC he had a disgusted look on his face .

 

Also I am currently REALLY into custom keyboards so that is occupying me COVID ("free") time.

 

I am to young to young to be super familiar with the older hardware, really only got my first taste with my i7-4770k.

 

But that IBM looks like a big beauty, at least it boots! How old is that Pro 180, 90's (when I was born lol)? I looked at the Intel Ark specs and it doesn't say.

Yeah, I still have my dad's first computer as well though it's a lot newer haha a pentium 100. The motherboard died due to cmos battery corrosion but I'm hoping I can either fix it or find a replacement.

 

In opening up the Osborne your really just pulling covers and looking for any obviously bulging caps. That system, especially if it's in working condition should be worth some money as well. It would be a real nice piece to restore.

 

The pentium pro was released right in the end of 1995/beginning of 1996 I believe. It came in 150, 166, 180 and 200mhz variants and could be used in 4 way smp applications. It was optimized for 32 bit code and so was ideal for operating systems such as windows nt, Linux, etc. 16 bit code performance suffered though so it was really a chip for professional workstations and servers, though from the research I've done even the 16 bit performance was still at least similar to the pentium classic (non mmx). It was the first Intel processor to convert cisc instructions to risc and have a risc core as well.

 

The 180 specifically I believe was released in 1996.

Yes, MSX was standard made by Microsoft & ASCII corporation, where each machine is compatible with one another, similar to PCs nowadays. They almost never came to the US, so they are not known there. They supported Basic and had their own version of DOS called MSX-DOS

It was famous in Japan, many Japanese gaming companies started there, including Konami, Metal Gear started on it... It was also famous in the Middle East. As for Europe, it was a success in some countries.

 

I heard it also succeeded in South America, but I am still not sure about that.

I definitely can convince him at some point that I can restore it to it's former glory. I would like to at some point without question.

 

Damn that's nearly as old as me! I love that CPU frequency was below a single GHz hahaha. I mean I know that with older CPU's its as given it's just interesting to see that, and really cool that you actually got the system to post.

Well, I got beep codes at least and still have to figure out the power button. At least I know I can force it on and get some life. The beep code I'm getting though looks like it's for the cmos.

 

Custom keyboards sounds pretty neat, how do you go about making your own?

That's pretty sweet, it's a pity they didn't do well in North America. Ah so many neat old machines, there's definitely a few I'm gonna have to keep my eyes out for!
