The 2018 GPU Apocalypse

DavePlays

Is it just me, or did the price of GTX 1070 and 1070ti skyrocket in the last couple of days? On newegg, they are either out of stock, or about $1000?!??!?

Ethereum has gone up in value 50% or so this week. I saw a used MSI Armor 1070  sell for $1125 today on ebay, I couldn't fucking believe it.

I’ve been shopping and pricing out video cards and in the last 2 weeks the market has lost its mind. Cheapest gtx 1080 I can find is $999 US and 1080Ti $1200. I was expecting prices to drop at this point not shoot up $300-$400

At this point I may wind up waiting til April or May for upgrades instead of my next pay check.

Well I’m the states they aren’t normal. Next card release will be even worse.  As all the people wonna flock to the new shiny stuff, the audience is much larger now and they won’t be able to keep up yet again.

Just buy when something is in stock, that’s how everyone else is doing it.

Yeah In India, even the most basic GTX1080 stock and really old(manufacturing date) costs around INR 45000 around 750 USD and that's on Amazon.

GPU pricing has gone fully pants-on-head stupid.

I helped a friend select a GPU (1080) to buy her husband as a Christmas gift this year. Prices were stable around the $500-550 price point depending on model and level of fanciness.

Same model is now $800-1000. Freaking insane.

I was planning on buying a card after xmas to upgrade from my R9 290....but I don't game enough to justify a $300 price premium on a $500 card because that's just stupid. At best I can buy a 1060, which isn't drastically better than the 290 in performance, for an inflated $350-$450. Forget that!

Instead, since said friend now has a 1080 and doesn't need his R9 290, I'm borrowing it for el-cheapo R9 290 Crossfire until GPU prices come back down to earth. Not an ideal set up, but hey, it's free, and funds can grow a bit more in the meantime.

Holy shit, you are correct. The cheapest GTX 1070 in stock on Newegg is $939.

What the hell is going on?

EDIT: And apparently they are going for close to $700 used on Ebay as well!

I know what you mean. I'm on an old R9 270x and I was planning a complete overhaul to a 1080ti. I was looking at an 800 dollar ASUS ROG Strix card, now the 1080 Strix is 900. It's ridiculous.

NVIDIA and AMD should design cards that will flat out not work for mining so that consumers can actually buy the cards.

Then they wouldn't be useful for generating the graphics we've become accustomed to.

TBH, I really never liked the prices of Video Cards on Newegg. If you are not close to a MicroCenter or Fry's, I would try Best Buy. It's not the first place I would buy a card from, but generally speaking they are less affected by the marketplace insane prices.

I was looking to purchase a GTX 1070 and I cannot believe the prices.

Even at eBay the cheapest is $600

It has almost doubled the price about a month ago.

Even a GTX 1060 6GB costs $350

This should be illegal >:(

Yeah, we're all just a bunch of idiots experiencing nothing more than the placebo effect.

Where are you finding them for soo much $$? I picked up my Asus Strix 1080Ti OC for 779$ plus tax at Micro Center about a month ago.
