AMD Readies 9 Threadripper models

Except Intel's new hexacores and octocores only have 28 PCIe lanes from CPU, 10-18 has 44 from CPU, R7 has 16 PCIe 3.0 and 8 2.0, Threadripper has 64. If they need the lanes, they'll automatically be looking at 10C parts for the current generation, or looking at X99.

The meaningful advantage of X299 heca/octocores are clockspeed potential and quad channel memory. Both of which don't mean much until you explicitly need them, which not everyone does. Ryzen has demonstrated that it's rather capable despite those disadvantages.

I wasn't aware of that. Less of a risk then.

I still feel there's some vacant niche for something like a Ryzen 7 on X399 (or put differently, a successor to the 6900K). But maybe there's a reason why no company is targeting it (for example, the reason could be it's a pretty deserted niche ).

Or the fact that the 10c will probably be priced at like $500 and so an 8c would be fairly close in price anyway.

Look forward to seeing it become a reality and finally have AMD back in the mix for pushing technology forward.  It's about time as we haven't had an Opteron based servers in about 8 years as everything is Intel only.   My industry (enterprise hosting) is stagnant due to the Intel dominance, hoping AMD can bring their name back to high end compute and server hardware.

 

Having that many PCI lanes open no matter which TR you go with is a major marketing and operation coup. With a strong spread of 10 CPU's enterprise should be able to find exactly the product they need without sacrificing connectivity.

The 6 & 8 core Intel CPUs might also be out in something of a deserted niche as well.  One of the stranger aspects to come out of all of the Ryzen launch testing is that the 7700k is actually the better workstation CPU unless one is doing Export, Encode or Compile tasks. Going from 4/8 to 6/12 is dropping the base clock from 4.2 (or 4.3) to 3.5. 8/16 will have a base of 3.6 Ghz and 10/20 at 3.3 Ghz.  So maybe there's some good trade offs for the 8/16 part, but it's going to be wonky.

 

The problem with the way Intel segmented the Market for so long became pretty apparent when Ryzen launched.  Either programs are really 1-2 Threads or they are "GIVE ME MORE THREADS!" types.  I think Nvidia's driver is the only 6-threaded program around.  There's a very weird situation, unless that new cache system is something like a 25% IPC lift in a bunch of Workstation tasks, where the 7740k is probably the better CPU on stack below the 10c/20t part.

My guess is we'll get an 8c/16t X399 SKU during the Refresh round. For now, I'm sure they don't want to cannibalize their own sales, but there's a market for an 8c/16t part with THAT many PCIe lanes. Make a nice NAS build out.

Remember x299 has 24 PCIe 3.0 lanes from the chipset as well.

And since it's using DMI 3.0, only has enough bandwidth to fully utilize 4, but those are almost always reserved for additional controllers on the mainboard, or for x1/x4 devices like NICs.

At that point, it's 64 full fledged lanes vs 68, of which can only support the bandwidth for a full 48.

Believe me, most people who will buy the $2000 Intel CPU will either:

• Not even care about Threadripper because they want the best of the best
• Buy a Threadripper CPU as well

That is true but can be used for both sides.

 

I hope I wasn't coming off as being one sided, as that was not my intention. I just was referring to the AVX introduction sets, as I deal with them heavily and are highly efficient.

Depending how the clocks on the top-end Intel chips come up, I could see IT departments having to actually figure out which will work best for their workloads. And, given the difference in PCIe lanes & layout, one platform could be very much better for specific workloads. 

 

It's quite fun to see actual competition in all of the CPU space.
