Do people these days prefer "modern" Razer-esque designs that has weird angular lines and LEDs all over the place? I prefer the look of old Nvidia reference cards but people seem to like the Founders Edition more for some reason even though it looked something that would appeal to 13 year olds.

So the Q2 Vega release is probably this workstation card, RX Vega will only get "more details" mid June meaning they're probably not committed to a release for the gamer side since they probably don't have enough production yet.

Soooo... July or August for consumer Vega? Christ. I really wanted to give AMD a try as my next GPU but I'm really getting close to just pulling the trigger on a 1080 Ti.

- no consumer Vega in Q2

- low ROPs count
- lower bandwidth than Fiji

- probably water cooled again

Oh come on AMD I'd like to upgrade my gpu, please.

No, RX Vega was never planned for this talk with investors. RX Vega is oriented to consumers, and we have Computex for that. AMD holds a press conference on May 31st giving them the entire month of June to still release the thing. Fiji was announced during Computex 2015, RX480 during Computex 2016 and they all launched in June following the events.

The square look was in fashion in the 70's, I never liked the whole lights and angular lines thing either.  I like things to be either elegant or aggressive, not toy like. The sapphire fury with it's three fans was a nice looking card in my opinion, not overdone and not bland.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

The Vega Frontier Edition looks very much like Intel's Xeon-Phi.

This is what I was referring to earlier, Intel know their product is going into a machine and won't be seen, users don't want to pay for a glowing letter light.  This is basically the white express van of the compute world.   No fancy mags, undercarriage lights or decals.

Aye, the fanciest thing on the that Vega card is the little corner LED. Neither really bother me to be honest. Enterprise cards are installed and only seen if something goes wrong.


i hope the Radeon RX Vega card has a similar aesthetic to the Fury X and Radeon Pro Duo. Loved that look.

Also noticed that the images of the card shows dual 8-pin, whereas the card Raja held on stage was 6 and 8-pin power.

Strange. Why would AMD make a render of a product that seems to need more power?

 

Or the card Raja was holding was an engineering sample and the render is the real thing.

Possibly the render is of the top end card, he is holding a tier down card.

Yep

 

And after telling the gaming community continuously that Vega launches in 1st half 2017, it would be lame if they only launch the professional card. They wouldn't have lied technically, but they would have deceived us badly.

 

Remember those rumours that Vega 10 supply is very short due to limited HBM 2.0 supply? Well maybe those are true.

And due to that AMD knows they can only selling a small quantity of Vega chips so they want to focus on the lucrative high margin professional segment.

Could be a cut down version, or lower clocked one compared to the dual 8-pin needing one.

Interestingly the article on Anandtech http://www.anandtech.com/show/11403/amd-unveils-the-radeon-vega-frontier-edition points out that the way in which AMD has implemented 16GB of HBM2 confuses them. Which is saying something since it's coming from the fountain of knowledge Ryan Smith.

Looking at that water cooled Vega card, the size doesn't make any sense if it's a single GPU card.

If it was purely an HBM2 GPU it would be around the size of the Fury X. Instead it's a full length PCB card.

The card has 16GB but only 480GB/s bandwidth. That means either 4 stacks of 4GB, which would mean significantly higher bandwidth. Or they're using two 8GB stacks, which is also unlikely. Neither Samsung nor SK Hynix has shown any working.

Even Ryan Smith at Anandtech doesn't know how AMD might have done that.

Calling it here folks, Vega 16GB is actually 8GB HBM2, and 8GB GDDR5 using the HBCC to use it all.

They don't list the card as having 16GB HBM2, they state and list 16GB HBC - High Bandwidth Cache.
