FCC eliminates ISP price caps for businesses

Quote

The Federal Communications Commission today voted to eliminate price caps in much of the business broadband market by imposing a new standard that deems certain local markets competitive even when there's only one broadband provider.

"What this order does is open the door to immediate price hikes for small business broadband service in rural areas and hundreds of communities across the country," FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn, a Democrat, said in a detailed dissent. "Cash-strapped hospitals, schools, libraries, and police departments will pay even more for vital connectivity."

One provider counts as as a competitive market? I like to really, really think going to a prestigious school required you to be smart. But I guess becoming a lawyer turns your intelligence down so far that it makes Forrest Gump look like a genius.

The FCC majority argues that nearby ISPs would be more willing to extend their networks to additional customers if there are no price caps.

Bull shit, they ain't gonna extend if they don't want to extend.. price caps or not.

You realize she's saying that argument is bogus right? That this just serves to allow providers to price gouge people & businesses simply because those people & businesses have no other choice

One thing that strikes me is: The only thing that ever had data caps before was "Business Data Services" which in layman's terms, is technologies like DS1, DS3 (aka OC1, OC3) which is limited to 45Mb/s and runs on coaxial copper (yes, it uses coax, even though it is only offered by phone companies. Turns out that coax is used in a lot of interesting ways by phone companies). The good side of a DS3 line is that it is 100% dedicated, and has incredible latency for a copper connection. The bad side is that all that copper is getting old, and you can't make it go any faster (the existing copper would not be suited to be re-used for DOCSIS because the runs are too long without amplification, and DOCSIS doesn't really have any way for all of the possible bandwidth to be used by a single endpoint)

TL;DR: most of the services used by businesses weren't being capped before, and this service that was being capped is pretty antiquated. This will encourage the move to fiber for more services.

Who is going to be able to move to fiber? You really think these chucklehead corporations are going to actually run new infrastructure? They are going to raise rates 15% per year for the next 4 to 5 years and then make some promise of better services they have no intention of keeping.

Problem with that is that most prestigious schools are not about how smart you are anymore (unless you're on a grant or scholarship), it's more about how much money you (or more likely your parents) are willing to pay for the privilege of having a degree from (insert school name of choice).

On topic though, maybe some family/hospital can sue an ISP if a critical system is not provided due to the costs associated and the sharp gouging in prices.  I would prefer that public funded organizations such as school, EMS, police services, etc. are exempted from paying ISPs since that money they are paying with for the services are coming from tax-payers.  (Quick thought: maybe some of the districts that have an issue like this occur can place a new local tax on the ISP to pay for public services...)

hey, they aren't bad. They just have asstasstically shit prices. I high much better internet than most places (based on avgs) but I also have to pay more than most places for it. And comcast just keeps upping the price >_>

but back on topic

What kind of competitive market has one competitor? I always thought such a thing was a monopoly. But what do I know, the FCC has the american peoples best interest in mind...

Yeah sure it will get better with another president just to see the next disappointment in 4 years. It is a never ending cycle.

Truly, it is. Although hopefully Trump will keep his promises. It'd be a shame to see him go the way of past presidents and promise all these grandiose plans and not follow up with them.

It's not that the people in charge are idiots, it's that they're bought and paid for.

Well I guess it means becoming a lawyer turns people into a bunch of clueless dirtbags these days. I thought lawyers were competent and smart, but oh well.

Look up Tennessee, they could have run fiber for everyone in the state but instead gave $45 million to comast and at&t because fuck the people.
