No, not at all the same thing. We've known this was going to happen for like a month now. I was surprised (and pissed) when they announced it. I'm not surprised that they followed through. I'm still pissed though.

According to LTT members, and those that don't actually understand the grittier details of Windows or how software development actually works - everything, provided that it occurs with software that tickles their fancy. If it were Windows 10, nobody here would give a shit. In fact, they might even celebrate that.

You forget one thing windoes works on x86 which means that the instructions that the cpu has to do are universal it doesn't matter if you are using a 7700k or a 2500k all the instructions needed to run the os are there and it will work.

The only problems you might find is in extra stuff the the cpu might support that need to be know by the os like hardware video encoder and shit like that (think netflix 4k)

This is similar to people feigning outrage at the recent Ryzen FM3 bug: Almost nobody uses applications that routinely take advantage of most of these instruction sets. Even if they did those wouldn't need to be addressed at the OS level necessarily and the OS itself shouldn't be trying to use said instructions since it's supposed to stay out of your way and use the least amount of resources possible.

Here's a tip, take it or leave it: if a company tells you they won't support x because of y then you go out and buy y to use with x that's your fault. 

You need to read my post again. This is not like what they told people they would being doing, months ago - it's very different than there being no Kaby support for Windows 7. What Microsoft is doing is disabling the support for Windows 7 (not modern CPUs) in systems with Kaby processors. No Kaby support for Windows 7 means nothing will be added to Windows 7 for the sake of Kaby. It doesn't mean disabling features of Windows 7, such as Windows Update, on any system detected as having Kaby. I really cannot fathom how that's difficult to understand.

This isn't a case of new CPUs not being supported, which would mean no effort is made to accommodate those CPUs. This is a case of effort being made to disable OS features in order to inconvenience and exclude those CPUs.

On the bright side of things, this is still only a matter of criminal Microshit being obstructionist. Anyone with a newer CPU can still create their own custom ISO with all updates installed, or download one from someplace. They can also get all updates that they want from WSUS - which is better than getting them through WU, because WSUS allows people to get just the security updates, and not the cumulative updates. Microsoft is only adding bad stuff in the non-security updates.

So if this wasn't in place I would

 

1) Download an update

2) Possibly run into a technical problem with the newer architectures (extremely unlikely but lets say it happens for the sake of argument)

3) Call Microsoft for support

4) Be declined said tech support on the basis of using unsupported architecture.

 

That would be lack of support. Lack of getting any updates goes beyond that and actively interferes with regular OS operation for no good reason (Compatibility concerns are a reason, just not a good one)

hey if we could all abandon DX12 and just use Vulcan for everything we could move to Linux and not have to deal with this crummy shit? no? kthen

It is far more complicated than this. Maybe YOU treat your PC as a console. But many use and run software that don't run under Linux based OS. And Linux based OS has its shares of issues as well. Not to mention, and that affects you, performance differences. Drivers aren't great, and the OS (or what it seems) doesn't do a good job at maximizing performance out of your hardware. Games runs better on Windows.

True. But, hang on... If Microsoft delivered an update that BSOD not supported CPU (on purpose or not, with some PR justification), then, well, this thread won't exists as it is. The topic will differ that some update BSODs unsupported OS, and now your point is valid.

The cause issue part is not the discussion. It is the artificial block. See, Windows NT 4.x doesn't support your nice CPU, let anything inside it. But you can make it run. You'll have all the updates.

But the chances of that happening without any malice are very, very slim so it defeats the purpose. Let's not deal in hypotheticals since you have a very different standard of trust towards Microsoft than many of us.
