As for the rest of the internals, that's the real question. The WIFI card was some qualcomm card that has no windows 8.1 drivers from what I could find.

Then there's all the lenovo specific stuff with the yoga function (360* hinge and all the stuff with that), as well as the touchscreen.

 

Speccy usually can tell me exactly what's in a machine.  But I never worked with 360° hinges and  I can imagine that those use proprietary drivers, in which

case you're indeed locked down due to the laptop's manufacturer not providing 8.1 support for the hinge's functionality. 

 

That being said, if you can identify the files responsible (by checking the last changed after installing the driver on a fresh install), you may be able to copy-paste those files over to a fresh 8.1 install.  That's how people put DX11 on XP and that kind of fun. 

It's a crazy idea and you're likely to waste a day with all the re-installs and the fiddling, but what if it happens to work?  Then you should be good for the next 6 years (8.1 goes EoL in 2023)

I tried to go through the entire list of drivers for the laptop provided by Lenovo and had no luck. I did forget to install the two bits of software that they have hiding out in the windows store...

 

And I'll be using 8.1 until Microsoft comes out with something that isn't going to spy on everything I do and try forcing updates, software, and ads into my computer.
So maybe all I need is Windows 10 Enterprise, then just lock it down, since I've heard it gets a lot more control over everything than other versions of Windows 10.

Like I said, there are only a few true DX12 AAA titles. The ones that are like AOTS show vast improvements

Tried to switch back to 7. On a 4K screen, that's a big no-no.

I will fully switch to consoles for gaming before I become complicit in microsoft's attempts to turn my personal desktop into an advertising platform. I hope this trend continues and it forces microsoft to pull their head out of their ass and fire anyone even remotely associated with the direction of the current iteration of windows.

I can't comment on AMD with Linux, but from what I hear their open source driver is much better (aka, AMD themselves help develop it). Nvidia it's proprietary driver or 15% GPU speed with nouveau. The trouble is, nouveau works perfectly aside from speed, whereas nvidia proprietary driver does things like underclock your card for no reason, or screw up X11/Compiz after hibernation etc.

You keep on leaving out how Vulkan doesn't run as well on older versions of Windows than 10, because older versions of WDDM don't provide as deep low-level hardware access 9_9

 

Keep in mind I'm not defending 10. I'm just saying that even if you're gonna be playing Vulkan games, they will run better on 10 than 8.x, 7, Vista and XP due to WDDM 2.0.

What console are you planning to get then?

Xbone isn't an option because MS wants to close the gap between Xbone and desktops, so that will end up being the same disaster.

I wasn't aware that's a factor. I'd like to see some benchmarks comparing Vulkan in Windows 7 vs 10 for verification, to see how much difference in gained FPS there is, if any. I didn't find any when I searched, just now.

Apple had the advantage of having more keyboard shortcuts than you could shake a bushy stick at, mixed with all the trackpad and magic mouse ones. All by default, and very user customizable; they even have little gifs showing how to redo trackpad short cuts, and macros in their "control panel".

Since I'll have to switch to W10 on my upcoming Kaby Lake build, I'm gonna just go the direct route and block traffic from MS via my router. Gonna be annoying as hell to have to constantly turn it on and off.

It's an extreme measure, but sadly needed. MS really aren't helping themselves here; nor the consumer.

 

Sadly the switch to Linux is still a pipedream for 99% of all users. :(

Not to mention that the testing takes a really long time. Call me whatever you want, but I don't use programs like anti-beacon because it seems to me like they run in the background, and/or they can cause other issues. If I am going to block something, I need to research how to block it properly and what effects blocking it will have. "Windows 10 anti spying" programs reminds me a lot of these registry cleaners people loved to use before. People have no idea what they do, but since someone else told them that it was great they just run them without asking any questions or understanding what they are doing. That's a really bad idea.

 

On top of that, the way Windows 10 is built is an issue. Things like not being able to install individual updates can't be fixed with some simple script. A lot of these scripts even goes as far as to block all updates. That's a terrible idea. It's as bad as those scripts that blocks the Windows store, causing your built in UWP programs to not be able to update themselves.

 

But even if we ignore all those issues, we still have the issue of Microsoft treating their customers like garbage. It's kind of like going "yeah my husband him me, but if I put makeup on it's like it never happened". Sure you could do it, but you shouldn't have to. Especially not since he will be back in a few months and throw another punch your way.

You shouldn't accept this type of treatment, and I am happy to see that people don't do it.

 

Microsoft won't change their terrible behavior if people just comply. Since they also do shitty things like silently neutering GPOs you can't be sure that tools like anti-beacon actually have any effect unless you check it for yourself.

It wasn't too long ago Microsoft changed a few GPOs so that the on/off switches didn't do anything. They were still there in the list, and you could still enable/disable them, but it did not have any effect whatsoever unless you had Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education editions.

Now everything else I do agree with you, it sucks that Microsoft can't just do their clients a favour and make customization plain simple, I have being wanting a native black theme for the explorer.exe since forever and no words on that, and they have mistakes that simply makes no sense, I know most users are very incapable but Microsoft should quit treating all like babies and give the user more freedom.

 

It does suck that I have to install a third party application like Classic shell because I can't natively have the Normal start menu like the win7 one, I do not want one filling all my desktop space nor being filled with useless apps and advertises I do not want, it sucks that I have to edit the registry to have the Windows Photo Viewer back as prefer it over the "Photos" instead of just giving me an easy switch way... etc.

 

But I am not complying by finding these ways around, nor using third party applications, what were I suppose to do? use the Windows 10 as it is and just complain? No I did my best to still make it the operating system I wanted it to be, I know it isn't perfect but it is a "resistency" if everybody started doing what Linus decided to call win9 through these tweaking it is more likely(though not certain sadly) to Microsoft realize That is what the users want.

So far I haven't gotten any advertising, if I start getting it I may truly consider going back. Either way the spyware was added to w7, so for that it doesn't really matter.

 

Game devs and gpu manufacturers, please start supporting linux properly

The problem is that the video is already over a year old, and in that time a lot of things might have changed in that time.

Also, I don't really trust Jerry. I haven't seen a lot of him, but the way he described things like C on the WAN show makes me not trust him.

 

Going to look through the video but judging by the description alone the video seems... not that great.

Things like "remove all entries related to X" is bad. Especially since it seems like neither Jerry nor the viewers have any idea why these entries are even there to begin with. Not to mention that Windows actually ignores some host entries... Without logging your network traffic you might just be doing a bunch of things which have no effect.

 

Haven't looked through the entire video yet, but I am getting a "spray and pray" vibe from it.
