Windows 10 loses market-share to Windows 7 for second month in a row on Steam hardware survey / again on NetMarketShare

Do you ever wonder what happens when a newer OS is essentially a re-packaging of its older version, but with adware, data-theft, and many inconveniences put into it, for the purpose of generating daily revenue for the developer, at the expense of all the OS' license-owners? Well, Windows 10 has given us an answer to that question of the ages - and, apparently, it's that people just go back to the earlier, cleaner, more reliable presentation of that OS.

 

Windows 10 usage on Steam falls again for the second month in a row

Today, Steam releases its hardware survey for February, and that shows that Windows 10 usage has fallen on the gaming platform too, and not for the first time. Usage in January was also down from the month before. Is it the start of a downward trend?

 

Windows 10’s share on Steam peaked at 50.35 percent in December, but then slipped 0.68 percentage points in January to 49.67 percent. It fell another 0.9 points in February to put it on 48.77 percent.

 

It was good news for Windows 7 though, which saw its usage grow by 1.67 percentage points last month to put it on 31.41 percent.

 

Those figures are only looking at 64 bit versions of the OSes in the Steam hardware survey, while when looking at both 64 and 32 bit versions, Windows 10 is currently at 48.77%, while Windows 7 is at 36.81%.

 

Those figures also represent gamers using the Steam client. Outside of gaming, Windows 7 remains by far the dominant Windows OS in usage, and is still growing in its market-share, according to Net Market Share's monthly statistics.

 

Bad news for Microsoft as Windows 10 loses market share -- again

According to NetMarketShare, in January, Windows 10 hit a big milestone. The new OS managed to grow by nearly one percentage point, to give it over 25 percent of the market. That’s pretty good going.

 

However, in February, Windows 10 went back into reverse gear, losing share, and not for the first time.

If you recall, back in September, Windows 10 was reported to have lost 0.46 percentage points. February’s drop, which sees the OS falling from 25.30 percent to 25.19 percent, a decline of 0.11 percentage points, isn’t as dramatic, but it’s still far from good news for Microsoft.

 

Windows 7 was, naturally enough, the beneficiary of this decline, rising from 47.20 percent to 48.41 percent, an increase of 1.21 percentage points, showing the aging OS isn’t going away any time soon.

 

Windows 8 actually also grew a little in February, going from 1.62 percent share to 1.65 percent, an increase of 0.03 percentage points. However, Windows 8.1 fell from 6.90 percent to 6.87 percent, cancelling out that growth. Combined, Windows 8.x remains on 8.52 percent.

 

As for XP, the ancient OS saw a slight decline, going from 9.17 percent to 8.45 percent, a drop of 0.72 percentage points.

 

It's probably not surprising to anyone that people want an OS that is about serving them, rather than Microsoft, which is an area in which Windows 10 struggles very badly. I mean, who wants advertisements in their personal space, in the OS-instance which they are the sole owner of? Not me, for sure.

All that means is that newer CPU features won't be back-added by Microsoft into earlier Windows OSes - but new CPUs still run fine on older Windows OSes, and the drivers from Windows 10 might even be able to be installed on earlier Windows OSes.

I wouldn't go and say performance decreases on game made from DX12 as there are only a handful actually made from the start with DX12. As most are DX11 with a DX12 patch on it so they can claim it is DX12. This is usually were the decrease in performance comes from. DX12 also have theoretical VRAM stacking and you can use AMD and Nvidia but no devs have made this happen besides AOTS. I do like Vulkan's multi  platform support and the performance gains on both Red team and Green team.

Honestly I'd leave Windows altogether if the main games that I play worked a little better on Linux.  Lately Windows has been a huge mess and a disappointment for me.

Despite all they did to try to incentivize people to make the switch, I guess the various things they did to annoy people more than compensated.  Can't say I'm surprised with the stories most people tell of their Win 10 experience.

 

I wonder what will happen going into the future as they simply use their market position to effectively force people to upgrade by making newer hardware not work on old versions of Windows?

There's always Windows 7 to tide you over for another few years. Its not a mess and isn't a disappointment over XP.

@AnnoyedShelf It is just around the corner, there have been some advancements in the Linux kernel that provide nigh transparent GPU pass-trough.. Perhaps that will incite developers to support Linux more ubiquitously.

@Ryan_Vickers Cannot say I blame them. As the only competent tech guy in the family, everyone and their dog had their PC 'upgraded' during the update onslaught... Every time I have to touch it, I hate it even more. It is a nightmare from an administrative standpoint since MS just undoes every setting and policy with the forced updates..

I don't think that's true.  They do benefit form Vulkan from what I've seen.  It's just that the improvement (~10% or so) pales in comparison to AMD's improvement (30 - 40%)

Will that actually do anything for games?  It was my understanding that this feature would primarily be useful for people running Windows VMs on a Linux host

@Ryan_Vickers It would indeed help games running on Wine etc.. vis-a-vis emulation. However I am more to the idea that the fact that Linux would have more solid GPU support, would prompt developers to natively develop for Linux. But indeed, it would help "emulation" immensely.

I feel like I'm letting the team down with my Win10 laptop... At least my desktop has 7 on it. 

 

I can understand why people are leaving 10, though. Windows 10 is the epitome of "The user is the product". If the Nvidia drivers for Linux didn't decide to under clock my 965m to 135MHz whenever a game opened, I could use Linux nearly full-time on that machine...

I don't care about DX12, but Win10 can be edited to be, look, feel just the exact same as the Win7, classic shell, old windows photo viewer back, media player classic, get rid of cortana, get rid of notification center, use Spybot Anti-Beacon, delete/disable xbox dvr... etc... I won't go through the entire list but I did constant changes and registry tweaking that results in the Win10 being an enhanced Win7 and it does run smoother and has a much better task manager etc...

 

With that said I do not understand why don't more people bother themselves editing their operating system to their liking, it is not that hard and very rewarding, instead they go back to "outdated" ones without any need.

 

I do not understand why is Microsoft trying so hard to get rid of the start menu though, that crap that win8 was... are they That much in need to copy Apple? Everyone who uses Windows is used with the start menu doing its thing down there on the left and appreciates it, leave it be lol

To be 100% transparent though, my main machines are still running Windows 10 Pro, as I kind of need it for school and work.  Still a shitty OS though.

Steam on linux has CSGO, L4D2 and rocket league and linux is way better for android programming so no need for Windows here

Because it takes time and it's annoying. And you won't get it to look and work exactly the same as the old one.

Nivida seems to get earlier support for steam games but it has some serious bugs. Current major bug on debian/ubuntu is mouse and keyboard doesnt work after suspend

Well, the experience I've had with Nvidia on Linux has been horrible:/. Even if it wasn't for the under clocking issue, I have to use an outdated driver (367 instead of 378) because newer versions cause issues when the laptop hibernates and then re-awakens, requiring me to use "compiz --replace". 

 

I hope Vega has some decent Linux support, I might have to switch....
