A router, by Google!  Because searching the internet, glasses, a car, email, documents, video chats, maps, a streaming device, and android weren't enough! :)

Dubbed simply Google WiFi, It will cost $129, the site reports, and will debut at an event Google has announced for October 4, where many suspect the search giant will reveal its latest own-brand Android phones, a 4K-capable Chromecast device and the availability date for Google Home, its Amazon Echo competitor.

i'm more interested for the 4K chromecast. if it comes with HDR capabilities it'll be pretty compelling with 4k hdr tvs. though it would be nice to have 60fps support as well.

My WRT 54G is doing just dandy. More ways for google to spy on you IMO

Yea, there are the alix computers but they cost as much as a high end consumer router and dont come with Wi-Fi.

Yes but it's only as good as the hardware you use, specifically the NICs. I personally would prefer having a dedicated router and dedicated firewall.

Don't pfsense routers give you a lot of additional functionality? Like serving as a firewall, QoS services, etc.

You can do pretty much all of that with Edgerouters too as long as they are configured properly.

Well in most professional contexts routers and switches do tend to be separate devices so it actually is more elegant.

I don't think it would be any better or worse if they were separate, it's just two devices instead of one. Also the hardware in an Alix computer is likely much better than a standard EdgeRouter. The NIC's are 1GB standard. That being said, I don't use one because I dont think the price is worth it, but I have been thinking about messing around with one. I don't know, I just dont see any real benefits from PFsense for consumer networks. Multi-Wan capability is awesome and capture portal is cool for businesses

So you're spending 60 (maybe even 124) plus an entire computer rig (even if a small one) to replace a 120 bucks router?

 

This need to be 20 to 30 bucks to make sense tbh.

Come with up to 3 nics and a mpcie slot for adding wifi. It will still cost a bit more total, closer to 150 but if you wanted any specific pfsense features its not unreasonable.
