Firewalls in pfsense are software based while a dedicated firewall is hardware based. Pfsense also only has an IDS firewall and not an IPS firewall.

IDS = Intrusion Detection System

IPS = Intrusion Prevention System

Ahh ok, I'm not really well versed in firewalls, but wouldn't a hardware firewall be faster but also more difficult to adjust/update? With a software one you could update settings or definitions.

They have firmware you update that controls it. Firewalls also don't exactly have definitions. Ideally you would also want an anti-virus server.
