OK, time to go into the registry and find the cortana setting. Microsoft never cleans that out, so we will probably have a switch for it in there.

People, this is again jumping to conclusions.

The insiders ring is not necessarily an indication to what will be released on the public build.

Insider ring inclusions are there to. be. tested. wholly freaking cow.

I am not going to sit here watch a bunch of foolish commentary about how something in an insider ring build will become the norm in the public release. This is not the first time an insider build has has numerous items that were removed or changed over the course of the testing and by via continued input of insider feedback. I am sure there is a reason for the Cortana lock, I for one can think of several reasons why MS did this and just for starters to test the amount of telemetry is being put out by Cortana.

It is possible that MS is doing this because of the French demand, to see if they can trim the telemetry.... just my 2 cents here.

People calm down for Pete's sake.

Which PSA are you referring too? You mean what I posted on this thread? That is not a defense, that is what I noticed with my latest Fast Ring insider build.

I am just pointing out what I find out. I am hopping that others, that have more time, can dig more to confirm or deny what I discovered. I already posted about the unable to disable Cortana option in the feedback hub while back.

Right now, we are at Build 14393.5 if you wonder. This one might be the official release one (the Anniversary Update), as there is only 1 week before it is officially release. They might release a new build just to round things to 14934 or something later this week.

No. It does not listen if you have the option "Speech, Inking & typing" disabled (this seems to disable Cortana, but the search box still uses the web/bing to give you information, and features like reminders still works). You can also set the permission to not allow mic access to Cortana in the Setting panel.

See my post:

Now, note again: What I mentioned on my post, is what I noticed with the latest insider Fast Ring build. Things may change, and that is just based on observation. I don't know if it still does stuff on the back, and things.

I wouln't mind so much if Cortana wasn't completely useless. I really want to like it, and the jokes it makes are kinda funny, but that's it.

Allow me to integrate my gmail account so it can tell me when mail arrives, allow me to choose the search-engine, add some actually useful features.

I'm not sure you can intergrate your Gmail account with Cortana. If you can't it's probably becuase it's a Windows centric virtual assisstant. You can't really blame them for not intergrating Gmail, yet anyway. I'll have to check though, if it does accept Gmail.

It will be a bit more useful coming the Anniversary Update, where you can send/receive SMS/MMS messages, and get phone notifications like low battery, and ask Cortana to find your phone (get the GPS location and ring it). You need Cortana installed on your phone. This applies to Android and Windows 10 Mobile users. iOS users gets no fun at the moment.

If you set up your e-mail with the Mail app, you'll get notifictions when mail arrives. The Mail app supports any mail client that offers IMAP and POP3 support, and has a nice set of options.

Anniversary thing: I'm aware, but then again, instead of making the cortana available on as many devices as possible, they lock out old stuff. Had to install through an APK on my Nexus 4. At least it works. I am quite curious what the differences between android Cortana and my Lumia 535 Cortana will be.

I have my mail setup, but I want Cortana to be able to read it, and give useful information from reading the message, like Google Now shows me my flight information when/if it sees a e-ticket in my inbox... Stuff like that.

Microsoft has removed the option to disable Cortana in the upcoming Windows 10 anniversary update.

Old vs New.png

Not that much more to be said really. For Windows 10 Pro users it seems like it will be possible to disable Cortana using a group policy (and home users will be able to disable Cortana using a registry edit), but I think it is asinine that we should have to dig around in group policies and the registry to disable it.

Microsoft is once again proving that they do not want to give users control over their own computer. I would not be surprised if the group policy and registry edit gets removed in a future update either.

I wonder how the Microsoft Defense Force will defend this move.

Let's be a bit honest here as well. the feature is not bad by design it's just unrefined. But at the same time if no one uses it how are they supposed to test and refine it on a mass scale?

I want to see what the defense has to say.

Anyway you can install another start menu and manually nuke cortana and most apps. Windows is going down the shithole since win 8.0 and its only going to get worse.

Im at the point at which i dont care about windows anymore, the only reason i still use it is because linux doesnt have audio drivers, and those that exist sound worse than 1980's stereo audio.

Anyway you can always use 8.1 or 7.

Linux seems lost, Windows is lost.

The only chance would be that google takes a swing at microsoft soon and pushes android for x86 with OGL/Vulkan as renderers and the play store. That wouldnt make things much better i guess since google collects all sorts of data aswell but at least there are custom ROM's possible in android-linux, remove all the crap.

Thats my only hope and dream atm.

I am surprised people are still shocked Microsoft Windows 10 is becoming power hungry. I mean, Windows 10 updates from Windows 7 and 8 were free, future updates allegedly free. M$ has to pull revenue from somewhere. And in most cases it will be the usual - ads and user data.

The way I see it happening is Windows is going to become easy to use with powerful features but as time goes we will see more and more power tools hidden away. Essentially it is going to become easier and safer to use for ordinary people (they will of course have to sign their privacy away just like they did on their phones using various apps) and much more pain in the arse for administrators to work with (as with every update there will be change in options to pick to make things happen).

So yeah, we are not living in dial-up age and Windows is not going to be just an OS sitting there waiting for user's input - fast transfer speeds are beneficial going both ways :)
