Just watched the entire video pretty much and now I'm going to write down some of my thoughts and butcher the english language in the process. Lel

 

 

Apart from the funny part of Raya "reviewing" beverage, getting wasted and the hilarious inappropriate color of the cups there are some interesting bits of information in this interview.

 

Also, sorry if this has been posted before but I couldn't find here by skimmung through the topics. Although I have seen many people being concerned and posting about stuff that Raya actually adresses here.

 

A few interesting parts are:

 

Raya mentions/admits that AMD wasn't really putting a lot of resources toward advancing the technology behind GPUs. He hints at the fact they allowed Nvidia to get ahead by not focusing on GPUs as much. He says that the Rx 480 is the start of them seriously trying to compete again. The reason for slacking in the recent past behind seems to be that a large part of the industry had believed that discrete graphics were going die for a long time, also AMD focusing on Semi-Custom (XOne/PS4). Of course now we know there has been a recent growth of PC gaming in the last few years and the predictions didn't turn out to be true.

 

Raya mentions there will be a heavy focus on Multi GPU (the 490 dual Polaris 10 actually would be in line with what Raya's vision is, if it was actually true). Also dual GPU make sense from a business standpoint. Multiple smaller GPUs are way cheaper to produce and can be sold cheaper because of the way higher yield compared to bigger chips. Of course the software has to be able to leverage the  performance potential of the dual GPUs. Explicit multi adapter in DX12 and Vulkan seem to be the tools to make that happen.

 

All in all Raya's seems to be quite a down to earth guy, really fun to listen to and passionate.

Ah so the 490 is a dual card. Well, seeing as the 480 has great scaling (from what I've seen) I think it'll be a good buy as long as it's not too expensive.

We might have a 295X2 on our hands but doesn't burn your house down and use 600 amps

Well I think they put resources into it just not as much to actually be on equal footing with or above Nvidia.  I'm pretty sure AMD had to save money because they are in quite the pickle since 2011, although scoring the consoles helped a lot I suppose.. 

 

Also keep in mind developing a new CPU arch takes 3-4 years or more, it's quite complex. They have been busy with CPU development for sure. Also a lot of power saving feature and optimization for Bulldozer that were pretty good actually (in relative terms, it still underperforms overall of course)

Its good they are self aware and know that Nvidia is in huge lead now, they know what to focus on in the future and hopefully RTG well bring back the price wars instead of this 700$ premium for cut down chip .

Anyway back to my statement, nvidia has low offerings too you know? I recommend AMD almost every time for a budget build but anything half decent shouldn't have a furnace radeon card in there imo.

Well intel did not sit on thei butt the whole time and also brought out skylake.
Don'T get me wrong. I would love for AMD to put up a fight against other companies that produce those certain products. Would make better prices for consumers and hell maybe they might hold the title for most powerful GPU again. I would love to see that but the public hasn't yet seen to much effort in that direction. The better price to performance overall is the first step but they have to regain som reputation amongst consumers.

well intel can afford to have many large teams working on architectures, AMD can barely afford one team to work on architectures, neither of them have been sitting on their butts its just that AMD can't make and release them at the same speed as Intel

I agree. AMD's biggest problems in the past have been:

 

Their marketing is not as agressive/clever as Intel/Nvidia.

 

They put out some very innovative technology witch seems to be to early to the party so software is not optimized for it and it underperforms (GCN->DX12->DX11), which gives it a bad rep which again causes software optimziation to be less of a focus (Bulldozer, Phenom I)

Kind of random, but can I listen to this sort of like a podcast? I want to watch it, but I will get bored looking at Raja talk for 1 hour. Maybe listening to this in the background while playing some other game will help.

If it never was stated,dont listen to other people,leaks or other BS,watch those 1,2 hour interviews presentations and then see if they ever stated that...People only think the RX 480 would be a GTX 980 because of the Ashes of Singularity benchmark scores since the RX 480'S in CF beat a GTX 1080 and a GTX 1080 is 980's SLI 

 

iirc they stated it would perform like a $500 gpu which can and is interpreted as 980 and fury levels

AMD makes ok products. They are good, but not always excellent. Sure, they could have done somewhat better if they had better resources, but I don't think that's their biggest issue. What they really need to do something about is their God damn marketing department.

It was people who speculated 980 performance. AMD didn't say anything specific, just VR ready for 200-300$, which along with the supposed 1500Mhz leak caused people to speculate custom OC RX 480 = 980 perfomance. Of course after everyone was aboard the hype train it suddenly turned into reference RX 480 = 980. Well...

And Nvidia CLEARLY said a GTX 1060 would beat a GTX 980,now lets see that failure...fucking Nvidia playing mind games,poor Keplar users :) soon coming also to Maxwell
