I can only imagine what Raja Koduri could do if Radeon wasn't in AMD's hands, but in Intel's.  Resource wise--it'd be a powerhouse.  I can dream.

iirc the 970 is about equal to the 780 ti

personally, I want to see ATI succeed again, but even the rx480 is going to be a moot point if the 1060 is actually as good as nvidia claims.  Same price, 2gb less vram, beat 980 performance.  Then we still have the 1050 yet to be announced that will probably beat 970 performance and therefore the 4gb version of the rx480,  Sure they came out before the 1050/1060, but it looks like they might be beat even in the mid range market.

i Feel bad for Keplar users,even tho i have a EVGA GTX Titan Superclocked Signature,i dont need more but for people who paid like $500 for the 780 now can get a GTX 970 which is better for $260 BRAND NEW

In DX12. Ties the 980 in aots and rise of the tomb raider, and beats it in Hitman. On 1st driver, whereas the full potential of the 980 is already reached. 480 has 25% or more performance yet to be extracted from driver refinement. They've not made any promises they didn't keep.

And had AMD released an actual updated 300 series the 380 likely would have beaten the 290 for quite a bit less as well, just like how the 970 beat a 780.

Even with a OC, the 295x2 is never at any point pushing beyond the limits of the connectors, wires or PCIe slot.

Infact, Tom's Hardware found that the 295x2 uses 30w average, and 39.8w peak power draw from the PCIe slot.

When you buy the R9 295x2 it comes with yellow warning stickers covering the 8-pins, telling you to read the user manual regarding power draw.

 

 

 

If you cannot be arsed to read the warning stickers and warning letters. you are so dumb you fucking deserve having the PSU blow up.

 

Its similar to buying a car and not bothering to check if it is diesel or gasoline. Then just fuel it up with whatever.

I would say it's more like buying a car and being told you can't go to any gas stations. But rather only a select few that may or may not be conveniently located near you.

there is A LOT of PSUs that can handle it. So your analogy is not fitting. All you have to do is read the label on the PSU, or god forbid, perhaps even the user manual, before spending 1500 USD on a ridiculous dual GPU card.

By that same logic, they should adhere to proper specs....afterall, it is a $1500 card. They have no excuse for cutting corners.

however NOW software is. It took 5 fucking years, but now it is. So your point is moot.

 

Also, i think it is crystal clear that this time around, AMD and others has gone ahead and prepped the software solution FIRST, prior to banking hard on multi-GPU.

your analogy would be fitting only if there was a shortage of PSUs that could handle the 295x2. There is not. You just need to actually READ a label.

I know such a task is hugely difficult for some people. Just like adding more powerphases, connectors, traces, VRMs and cooling is to an already cramped PCB.

Dual GPUs are worthless without driver support. AMD is worthless on driver support out of the gate (They support their products seemingly way longer though so end of the cycle their drivers are actually more mature than Nvidia that just kills driver support prematurely)

 

I don't foresee this going too well but on the other hand, crossfire and multi gpu support might get a very significant push by AMD so they could turn things around maybe.

 

I still think they should let the radeon division become ATi once more and not be weighted down by their failing CPU business side.

Well no. Because AMD got wrecked by Intel in 2011. It's no good to them now, besides which, software still isn't that well threaded. It's gotten considerably better, but it's not a solved problem for AMD. Hence the focus on IPC for Zen.

 

As for multi-GPU, well, there's been some work through DX12. But it's far from clear that multi-GPU will suddenly be amazing within a few months. Nvidia has been moving away from it, and AMD's multi-GPU cards have done worse and worse over the last few years. I'd love to see it happen, but I'm not optimistic.
